JonJon here. Currently 54 years old. Ive had Psoriasis since somewhere around 2010. Maybe even some symptoms as far back as 2008ish? It started on my elbows and I didnt pay much attention to it but you know how that goes.

Some years back I was taking Methotrexate and one thing lead to another and now i am on Humira.

Other than Humira I am not on ANY meds. Even with the Humira I still have plenty of scalp issues and some visible spots including one on my face which has been there a good while.

At this point my plan is to totally change my diet and to come off of Humira entirely. it is what it is.

When I look at "Psoriasis diets" or anti inflam diets, they basically rule out EVERYTHING I eat. Of course that is also a good clue as to why I ended up with Ps in the first place

I am also quite overweight. about 236lbs at 5.8".....which I read is also a contributor to chronic inflammation. Since I have a goal to be around 185lbs anyway, there is no way around a massive diet overhaul.

Stats. 7-29-2021

54 y.o.

5'8" 236lbs (goal 185ish)

taking Humira. Plan to come off of it eventually. Am on no other meds.

Ill be asking some diet and cooking questions im sure! lol

Cheers, JonJon

Welcome JonJon!

I think the scalp must be very stubborn when it comes to clearing. Confused At least that is how it's been for me.

I'm just starting on figuring out dieting myself. I posted in your thread with a little information. I'm not certain that dieting alone would be the answer for everyone with psoriasis as we're all different and it's possible that some of us may always need meds but I DO think what we eat obviously has effect on our health and heath conditions.

This is a great, friendly, informative place. Lots of information on dieting, medications, home treatments, etc so make yourself at home and always feel free to ask questions. Smile

Hello JonJon  Welcome to Psoriasis Club.

I can't help with diet as I enjoy my food and drink too much, but I see you have started another thread in Natural Treatments For Psoriasis so I'll leave you to it.

Humira is not one of the best bio's by the way and if you do fail to achieve your goal with a diet, it may be worth asking about one of the Interleukin treatments. You can read more about them here: Biological Treatments For Psoriasis

Anyway good luck.

Regards.

Fred.

Hi Jonjon,

Welcome to psoriasisclub.

I only avoid a few things, the rest is done by my treatment. But I do see that food is essential. For now I have too few information to be able to have advisory statements Smile.

Cheers,
Caroline.

Welcome to your new home away from home. I am the same age as you and I have made many changes recently to my diet. As much as diet is important on your journey with psoriasis, it is not the whole answer, IMHO. After I ditched gluten and went with more of a high protein, low carb diet, I had a dramatic transformation. After the gluten was gone, my psoriasis made a dramatic improvement, but nowhere near cleared. I do feel you are on the right track though. I also feel that if you tried a different biologic, you might have better results.

I have had psoriasis for decades. 21 years ago, I shaved my head to cut down on psoriasis in my scalp area and head. It worked for that area in the respect that it allowed me easier access to treat my scalp and head with treatments. I am still bald today. As far as weight goes, I am down to 332.6 lbs., a net loss of almost 35 lbs. So I hear ya, in respect of weight being an issue. I am also diabetic, so I don't have sugars in my diet. All in all, in the last 90 days or so, my life has made a dramatic change. I feel that I am much healthier, eat wayyyy better and exercise as best as possible (mainly because of a pinched nerve in my lower back, arthritis in my spine and PTSD). I am limited as to what I can do.

So in a nutshell, I hear ya. I am willing to listen and help as I can. And let me tell you that there is a whole new, exciting world of culinary experiences that is packed with flavor that awaits you!

Cheers,

yeah, I have done pretty well sticking to my "diet". its not really a diet because its more of a fundamental change in eating habits. No sodas or energy drinks or caffeine, no chips etc.

down about 9 lbs in 6 weeks...which is about an ideal rate of loss. from 238 down to 229 this morning. was down to 227 a few days ago but thats how it fluctuates when you are losing (or gaining)

I wont be TOO excited about the weight loss until I get below 209ish. Thats where I was around last Nov. That had been about a years progress down from 259ish to 209. I decided to take a break at the 209 and somehow crept back up to 238. Its crazy how it creeps back on.

In any case I definitely want a 6 pack lol. Yes, in a way its a shallow and meaningless thing, but it is what it is. Im only guessing but id say id have to be around 181 or so to even dream of defined abs. So I have a good way to go

When i went from 259 down to 209 I was lifting weights like 6-7 times per week. The crazy thing is, i was still drinking 2 Mt Dew Amps every day religiously. I just made it work out as far as the calories. I feel so much better about things now that I am doing without those 60 grams of sugar and who knows what all chemicals

--------------

I still havent totally eliminated so called "trigger" foods. I couldnt swear that im gluten free. I doubt I am since I have protein shakes 5-6 days per week and I always put some oatmeal in them. Im sure there are other things I can do to peck away at possible food triggers. For now I am going to content myself with the radical changes ive already made and i'll keep the weight lose going.

Pretty sure I am going to try some tanning today. I want to find out if the tanning beds at the local gym are uva "a" or uva "b". from what I read the "b" is the type that can be beneficial for psoriasis. In any case im going to try some tanning, if for no other reason that more vit D in the body.

I cant say ive seen many changes in my Ps. Im still taking the Humera but waaaayyyyy less frequent than recommended. It is what it is.

Peace, JonJon

Hello, JonJon.   I'm new here, too.  This forum has good information and kind members.  I can't contribute much, yet, because I'm only learning about Ps and dealing with it for the first time.  But . . . I think you could feel good about the oats you add to the protein drinks, as they are gluten free.  Smile

Welcome
