Hi everyone, Wave

Here's a little introduction as I've literally just joined the website this evening. I came across Psoriasis club while browsing the web for some help/advice about Psoriasis earlier today.

The dreaded Psoriasis first appeared when I was 19 and on my year abroad from uni. A few patches first appeared on my scalp. I didn't know what it was so kept scratching it.

I'm now 35 and it has gradually got worse over the years, with patches popping up in more and more places. I've tried lots of creams/potions etc and although it has irritated me, it has never been as bad as it is now.

The patches in various areas are getting worse (as well as every single finger and toe nail). But it is my scalp which is becoming unbearable. It has just got to the stage where it is embarrassing to go and stay at a friends' house because when I dry or even just brush my hair, the amount of nasty white scale which descends to the carpet is just awful. I was drying my hair at my parents' house this weekend over my suitcase so it would all fall in there. This is not a normal way to live!
I'm hoovering every day, every time I dry/brush my hair and the itching is awful.

I have just had a rather stressful summer work-wise, so I guess it could be something to do with that. Anyway, my plan is to go to the GP now work is getting back to normal and seek an appointment with a dermatologist to change/update the creams etc that I'm on.

One thing I've heard about is Aloe Vera. A consultant was telling me how, if taken, externally and internally, it can really help. It is quite expensive though so I'm looking to see if anyone here has tried it?

So I'm glad I came across this website today when my Psoriasis is starting to get me down - people look at your patches and I don't like it!!

Nicky

Hello Nicky Welcome to Psoriasis Club. you don't have to worry about leaving flakes around here we're used to it. Big Grin

Aloe Vera: I have heard some say it works and some it doesn't. the problem with psoriasis is we are always looking for something new. seeing a dermatologist is a good move, as they will be able to work with you to find what works. it can take time but they can help you cope with it. And so can we, no one on here will take any notice about what you look like, it's what's inside that counts.

Have a good look around the forum and shout out if you need anything. And if you do get fed up I'm always accepting Cake in the Off Topic section Rolleyes

Nice intro by the way. Thumb

Fred.

Hi Fred,

Thanks for your reply - it's great to be welcomed into the club and also great to be among people who don't mind flake after horrid flake falling from your scalp!

I might look into the Aloe Vera - it's like most things I guess.. some people say some treatments work while others don't get on with the same treatments at all.

I'm starting to have a look around the site - there are plenty of useful threads to read.

It's been a few years since I saw a dermatologist so I'm hoping they have some new treatments that I can try.

I'm also a fan of cake so I'll check out the off-topic area too! Smile

Nicky

Hello Nicky,

Welcome to the forum.
We are quite a bunch of nice people, which is the reason I keep on coming back here over and over again.

Remember that if you go to a dematologist, that psoriasis is an immune disease, it has nothing to do with your skin.... So basically you do need a doctor for internal diseases like a reumatologist, and stress is an important factor.

About the OffTopic section, don't think Fred's the sensible one.....

Have fun,
Caroline

Hi Caroline,

Thanks for your message. That's a really good point about the fact that it is an immune disease rather than a skin disease.

Also yes, I can feel the difference in how itchy the Psoriasis is in particular when work or a particular situation gets stressful.

I've got to find something better than the creams I'm using - the Psoriasis is getting worse and I have to do something about it because it is starting to dominate my thoughts every day.. argh!!

Thanks for getting in touch - great to get some supportive replies so soon after joining!

Hey nicky,

Welcome

Aloe Vera..... I suffer with very bad psoriasis, currently 90% covered last year I tried nothing but aloe Vera for 8 weeks drinking high does and applying....it was awful and dried my skin out a friend said she would of dipped me in oil it looked so bad....so a lot of cost and not much good for me I'm afraid (but what's doesn't work for one may work for another)

Now considering the amount of psoriasis I have my scalp is doing really well, I use head and shoulders MENTHOL (must be menthol) I put it on leave it for a min then wash out, I came across it by accident once when I had run out of prescribed shampoo and it cleared my scalp a lot on first wash (again what works for one etc) but for the sake of a few quid wrth a shot Smile

As for a prescribed shampoo I used to use Etrivex shampoo, apply a small amount leave for 15 mins then wash out!!!

Hope that's been of help god luck

Hanna

Hi Hanna, thanks for your message - I will definitely try the Head and Shoulders menthol. Let's hope that I'm also one of the people who has a scalp which responds. Desperate to find that one product which works for my scalp.
Thanks for the advice!

Hi Nicky

Welcome to the forum, I have recently joined, its a great place to be!! I know how that feels!!! Im in that boat at the moment, where its starting to take over you!! Have you tired salt baths? Someone told me to try it out, have only been doing it a few days, really seems to be helping, skin has been quite bad over the last couple of days, had a flare up, but since the salt bath, skin has really calmed down!!
Also watched a show called food hospital on youtube lol, as a friend told me watch it, they are talking about diet change, have also started that today myself, so fingers crossed it will work.

LINK REMOVED here's the link if you wanna watch the episode.

If you ever wanna have a chat, just send a message lol
