Hi,

My name is Kathy and I'm posting for my daughter. She has what I believe is some form of psoriasis. She has been to her GP about 6 times and 3 times to a Dermatologist who said she has atopic dermatitis but I would stake my life on the fact that he is wrong. I've known people with psoriasis and what she has is worse than anything I've ever seen. This morning her pajamas were stuck to her body from skin weeping and bleeding. Her acupuncture DR her body has damp heat. Last week her GP finally took blood and she is supposed to get the results in the next few days. I feel so helpless. Everything I've tried to do for her has not worked. Does anyone have any advice?

Hello Kathy,

Welcome to psoriasisclub.

It is very difficult, virtually impossible to decide on the basis of a blood test if someone has psoriasis. But it might be possible to exclude that it is not atopic dermatitis, I am not sure of that, maybe one of the others knows.
And if it is not that, then it looks as if it is psoriasis on the basis of logics.

So if you have the diagnosis AND a good dermatologist, if he/she is able to admit his/her fault, then there are a lot of possibilities for treatment.

I have the impression that she has quite some heavy outbreak right now. That should plead for as fast as possible starting with systemic treatment. Normally those are the hoops that you have to go through… Maybe an in-between, lighttherapy might help to quicly lower the burden for your daughter, but you have to remember that lighttherapy “never” definitively helps, so beware of too much radiation.

No doubt some of the other members will soon react to your question.

Hello Kathy  Welcome to Psoriasis Club

What you describe about your daughters skin weeping and sticking to her pyjamas does sound like psoriasis, but other skin problems can also cause that. This thread may help a little Types Of Psoriasis Explained but I agree with Caroline I don't think a blood test will give you a positive answer.

Does she have any flaky skin anywhere ? The scalp, elbows and knees are often a tell tail, I would have thought if it is psoriasis there would be some dry skin somewhere and not just weeping or stickiness.

It's so sad to hear about young people getting it, it's bad enough being an adult but having said that I know someone that has had it since childhood and she is so open about it.

I'm sorry I can't offer any more than Caroline, but psoriasis is so hard to diagnose let alone treat. Please do come back and let us know how it goes as your information could help others in the future.

Hopefully others will chip in.

Regards.

Fred.

Hi Fred,

Thank you for the reply.

This rash is very where. Even her face.  Over the Thanksgiving holiday we went to Gulf Shore thinking that sand, sun & ocean would help but she got worse.
I have attached a few photos and would be interested to know if you think this looks like psoriasis.

Thanks again for the reply.

Kathy

Unfortunately we don't allow photo attachments due to previous problems with spammers, you could however download one to somewhere like imgur and post the BBcode.

Welcome Kathy!

From my experience and what I've gathered from a few others, it's not uncommon for a general practitioner to diagnose dermatitis or eczema. However, a dermatologist should know the difference but let's face it, they also misdiagnose at times. Confused I would get another opinion from a different dermatologist.

Early treatment for psoriasis (due to insurance mostly) is ointments/light therapy etc. How old is your daughter? There are a lot of treatments, but not all are suitable for young people. As Caroline mentioned, light therapy can help but usually is given along with some other medication and it's not something good to do all the time. I had laser light therapy and got a few burns from it.

It could be with the seeping and all that whatever she has (psoriasis/dermatitis) had become infected. I've had that happen a time or two (much lesser area that your daughter however)

You didn't mention what the doctors have actually done to help her, what medication/treatment did they suggest?

I'd get another opinion honestly, although on what I just looked up about atopic dermatitis, some of the treatments are the same used for psoriasis.

Hi, it’s nice to meet you.

This is only my experience and not any kind of medical advice..

I’ve often had my psoriasis bleed but it doesn’t weep.. I’ve had eczema in the past and that would weep and crust. Also contact dermatitis which also was weepy.

I know however that you can get weeping psoriasis, and also pustular.. but I’m not sure whether this would be on the body or more a hands or feet thing.

I hope you find some help soon, and that this forum might be useful to you.

Right what Fred states, you better can post pictures in the Members only threads. You can easily make a new thread over there.
The are several tutorials about posting pictures over here in [Group Specific]

Welcome, Kathy.

You have found a really good place for information on Psoriasis.  I hope you are able to find some help for your daughter.  My first dermatologist was not helpful at all.  In fact, his advice was harmful.  I sought a second dermatologist and have had excellent care ever since.  Maybe you could get a second dermatologist?  Has there been a skin biopsy?

Welcome to the forum.  Good luck to you and your daughter.

Hi Kathy,

Welcome to Psoriasis Club  Welcome

You must be so worried for your daughter and I know from experience that Dr's aren't always right, follow your heart and if you feel she isn't getting the correct diagnosis, keep on at them.

The forum has lots of lovely people who will offer advice and so much support for you both.

Wishing you all the best and hope your daughter gets the treatment that she deserves / needs soon.
