8 year old daughter-desperately looking for help

Hi, my name is Inge and I'm from Belgium. I have an 8 year old daughter Nore.
When she was 4 years old she had, after the separation from me and her father, a first time psoriasis. The dermatologist immediately asked if Nore had experienced something emotionally . We got all kinds of ointments prescribed with cortisone. Over the last 4 years she got some scabs on her head and face, not heavy till last december. It started with a spot here and there but during the holidays it got much heavier. Head, face, , back, sides, belly and legs. This is accompanied by severe itching this time. I don't want to use cortisone. 
Does anyone here has a child that has psoriasis? Does anyone have some advice...again, I do not want to use cortisone. Thanks a lot for your help!

Hi Inge and to the forum I'm sorry I don't have any advice regarding children with psoriasis and I can understand your reluctance to use cortisone
If you look in natural treatments there is a thread on the right foods to eat, I will look for some links for you but I may be a short while as I'm out at the moment
I'm sure someone will give a better answer soon

Hi Inge,

Welcome to the forum.
I am so concerned that your child Nore has psoriasis that early already in her life.
Surely I can imagine that you do not want to continue on ointments anymore at a certain point.

The trouble is that dermatologists will follow a full protocol of steps, along for instance UV treatments to other medication. UV treatments for a your child are obviously bad, so I can advise you to be very resistant to that if your dermatologist suggests that.

In the Netherlands is some knowhow on medication to use with children, do you speak Dutch by the way? Oh, I see already, you are on the Dutch/French division line of Belgium .

One thing additional, using coconut oil can help against the itching and is harmless.

I don't blame you for not wanting to use cortizone. As Caroline said, coconut oil can help moisterize which helps with the itchiness. This is a great place for looking at what treatments are available. I'd ask her dermatologist and then check into the ups and downs and the side effects of what he or she recommends. I didn't have psoriasis as a child so afraid there isn't much info I can offer. I hope your daughter gets relief soon, that itching is no fun at all.

Hello Inge   to Psoriasis Club.

I'm a big fan of Coconut Oil too, it won't cure but it can help with the itching. As you're in Belgium you should be able to get hold of Dexeryl that could be worth a try.

Hi, sorry to hear of your troubles with your daughter.  My son started with psoriasis when he was just 11, so I understand some of your anxiety.  His really flared up badly when he started senior school, I think he must have had it before a little bit when I look back but it wasn't diagnosed, and the stress of a new school triggered it.  I could talk about what hasn't worked, but that's not so helpful really.  What does seem to have finally worked is a combination of a course of UVB treatment and dietary supplements of omega 3 oil, milk thistle, vitamin D, zinc and a probiotic.  We paid for him to see a nutritionist who ran a test to see what he was intolerant to some foods, most notably sugar and carbonated drinks which we have subsequently reduced (although he didn't have too much of either of these before). 

There are people who will warn against UVB treatment, however there is a certain amount anyone can have in a lifetime and also I have recently heard information that there is no increased risk of skin cancer and that lifetime limits on the amount of treatment are to be changed.

What we don't know is whether the psoriasis would have improved anyway now he is settled in to school and isn't so worried about it.

Try not to worry too much, I know it's difficult but I think my worrying about it so much contributed to him stressing about it as well, even though I tried to hide it from him.  Take care.
