Hi I'm new here, just got what turned out to be guttate after a bad strep infection in March. What started out as brown discoloration on my legs turned into tiny red dots all over my legs. I didn't pay much attention until it showed up on my chest. That's when i went to a dermatologist and got a biopsy. My doctor put me on betamethasone, however it doesn't seem to have lasting effect. I started out with tiny dots, now after 3 rounds of topical steroid, it spreads to other areas of my body. It does seem to reduce the inflammation and redness during my 2 weeks treatment, however as soon as i stop, the spots come back with a vengeance. Some spots even joined together and formed a 1inch leisons

I'm hesitantly carrying on with my current round of betamethasone as i know it will get worse and then have to go back to square one again. I heard people saying weening off steroid is the same as quitting cold turkey, since the lest you put on your body the easier it is to quit. I'm tempting to manage my guttate with dietary change and natural sunlight.

People often say that guttate goes away in a couple months. Does that mean I have to keep up with topical steroid until it fades? From my own experience, last time most of my spots seemed to fade, with only some white discoloration but then after a week, they come back redder and more raised and showed up at other places in my body as well. If you have succeed treating your guttate with topical steroid, do you still have to use it for maintenance during remission?

Hello kat_p  Welcome to Psoriasis Club.

Sorry I can't help with guttate. It could be worth you posting a similar thread in Psoriasis And Psoriatic Arthritis Topics to see if it gets more answers.

Or you could try the Search facility available to our members.

A biopsy is always good to get a positive result, if you want to try diet you can find some good information here: Natural Treatments For Psoriasis

Regards.

Fred.

Hi Kat_p welcome to the club I'm glad you found your way to us and hope you enjoy our site. I have never had guttate psoriasis but have used the steroid ointments lots and know you don't use them if you get into remission
And the reason you wean off it is to prevent the psoriasis bouncing back rather than it being like cold turkey from alcohol or drugs
Enjoy looking around the site and hope you get some answers

Take my advice; I don't use it anyway.

Yay, another Kat! We're taking over!!!

Welcome to the club. Sorry I can't help with info on guttate psoriasis either. I have used steroid creams however I don't recall being told to ease off them gently. I know with oral steroids you reduce the dosage gradually but I never really thought about it with topicals. I currently use a steroid ointment as needed. I do know that long term use of a topical steroid has it's own set of concerns. I think if I were you I'd discuss your concerns with your doctor and see what he/she says about it. If it doesn't have a lasting effect perhaps they need to consider something else? Whether you stay on your current treatment or something else I'd ask about maintenance as well.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Kat

Noooooo.  ... Doh not any more Kat’s  Doh They are taking over ! eek

Hi Kat,  Whistle

Welcome to Psoriasisclub. Enjoy yourself here, we are a joyful bunch of people spread all over the world.

Very annoying that you have guttate. I don’t know if there is anyone at the forum who also has that and can give some experience advice.
Most of us have other forms, but we all know that stopping a treatment often leads to a vengeance. Also most of us know that in the end the creams and topicals will not win the battle.
If treatment with diet and sun would work for you, that might be the best way. Our member alan540 has written a lot about is and also artemie is successfully on that track.

From fellow sufferers over here I have heard that they have good results with sorion creme, but I don’t know if that is available with you.

Cheers,
Caroline

Hi Kat welcome to the club Wave .

My Dermy made a passing remark once about me having Guttate Psoriasis and since coming off Cyclosporine if it is Guttate it has gone rampant particularly on my arms. Everywhere else is the regular plaque PS. Now I am not medically trained but I have to say a topical is next to useless on Guttate. Steroids in particular should not be applied to healthy skin as it will cause skin thinning and applying a cream to hundreds of small red dots is really really impractical. My current flair has been rampant for nearly 2 months now and is showing no signs of receding. It looks like it will take yet another systemic treatment. I have been lined up to try Otezla (Apremilast) having failed on Acitretin, Methotrexate and Cyclosprine, but I will have to wait until at least July as the Dermys are reluctant to start patients on new medications in the current climate of Covid19.

If you have any more questions please ask and I will do my best to share what I can with you.

Remember you are not alone
