Hi All! My name is Fred and I suffer from Psoriasis.

I've had it for about 6 years now and it has been getting progressively worse and worse. I'm a 49 year old male. Have been seeing a good dermatologist PA for years. His office practice sucks but he's one of the most caring and helpful people I've had the pleasure of meeting.

My condition is unique from what my derm tells me. Rather than having it in one spot I have it in many many spots all over my body. Small red spots on my thighs, arms, belly, and oh boy my back. The worst was my head. LARGE flakes always coming from there. They were typically raised and very scaly. I flaked all of the time. They were also itchy. Often scratched myself to bleed. No fun.

Anyway, I tried Stelara last year. Took it in April. Two shots to start. Started to see results in about 2 months. I was pleased! Then, I got a single shot to follow up and a short time later I noticed that my plaque was back. Each shot after did nothing to help really. At $19,000 a shot through my insurance I was clearly disappointed. I took my last Stelara shot on December 7th 2017.

My derm had been working to get me approved for Taltz. I just took my first two doses of Taltz on January 12th. One in the arm and one in my belly. It hurts like hell (I guess I'm a wimp) going in. You need to really press that button to make it work and to me it goes in slow. That last click takes a while.

The good news though is things have been GREAT. I am seeing TREMENDOUS effect from it. My head is smooth as is behind my ears. No flaking from the scalp. All of my patches are reduced or nearly gone! I can't believe how fast.

Today though, about a week and a half after the two starters I developed a raised red rash around the injection sites. They are somewhat itchy and painful to the touch. Some googling around lead me here and it appears that this is somewhat common. My derm told me to watch it and see if it spreads beyond what I see now. Also asked me to watch for any other symptoms like nausea, fever, and fatigue. Said he might want me to go get some blood work just to be safe.

Anyway, I am due to take my next single shot Friday the 26th. He told me to do it in the fatty portion of my leg and to avoid the other two areas. More than willing to share my results down the road if there is interest.

Thanks for reading!

Update: 1/28/2018

Just as an update for anyone who might be interested. The swelling and rash has gone down on my arm and on my belly were my first two injections went on the 12th. Last Friday I gave my injection in the fatty part of my thigh. This time I did let the medicine sit out for approximately 45 minutes before I administered. Unfortunately this time it would appear that the pain and swelling came within hours of the injection and is in fact still there. The central part of the raised area is nearly purple and hot to the touch. I’m taking Benadryl per recommendation of my derm and also Advil to try to reduce the pain. Honestly, I’m currently contemplating whether this is all worth it.

Hello Fred  Welcome to Psoriasis Club.,

It may be worth you asking for the pre-filled syringe rather than the pen type injection, I hate those pen things and always ask for the syringe.

Re the sight to inject: The best places are either side of the belly button (more than one inch away from the belly button) pinch an inch of skin and stab it in quickly, then slowly inject. Also I sometimes use the thigh, but find sometimes it can bleed a little.

Also make sure you take it out of the fridge for about 20 mins to 1/2 hour before injecting.

Good luck with Taltz, it's had some good reviews by our members.

Regards.

Fred.  No I'm not talking to myself Big Grin

*By the way I edited your post to tidy up the font as it was full off coding.

Hi FredM I've added an M for majestic otherwise I'll get confused with 2 Freds here ( 1 is usually enough  Big Grin )  Welcome to the club, you will find us a friendly group of fellow sufferers learning from each other's experiences I'm sorry that Stelara was not for you, and hope that Taltz will give you lasting clearance

I think it's worth sticking with it as it's giving you the clearance we all want ...I think it's just a matter of learning a good technique for injecting then it should get easier.

Good luck with the taltz and do keep us informed as that could help others with similar problems
You said for anyone interested, I'm always interested in reading updates, they are what makes psoriasis club a valuable asset

I'll add this to our monthly newsletter to reach our members that don't always log in

Hi Fred nice to meet you Wave

I also started Taltz this month, after Stelara worked brilliantly then stopped working all in the space of about 9 months.

I have only had the two loading doses so far but I know what you mean, the injection was a little more painful than the Humira pens, and it seems to go into your skin very very slowly!

Look forward to comparing notes.

Thanks for the welcome all.

I joined the list. Hoping to learn from it.

It really sucks that I have to deal with this part of the process. The stelara only worked well for me a few months after the first two doses. The maintenance doses every three months after were not enough. We tried two months to see if that helped and I continued to get gradually worse so we switched to Taltz.

I don't particularly care for the soreness to be honest. The one in my leg was the most painful of all. I did it Friday (left it out for 45 minutes first) and I am still feeling some aggressive soreness / pain today. This didn't happen with the Stelara. I only felt sick for the first few days after the injection. Light flu like systems.

Psoriasis...always some form of misery.

Welcome Fred! Afraid I don't have much in the way of advice as I'm just starting biologics next week, but I wanted to welcome you and wish you well. It doesn't sound like the injections have been very kind to you, but I do hope it ends up being worth it and you can get itchy-free

Hi Fred, I’m fairly new to the club but thought I could chime in about my experience with Taltz. I have suffered from psoriasis for more than 20 years - it got so bad that I was constantly covered from head to toe and I would cry from embarrassment when going to the hairdresser. My dermatologist got me into a clinical trial with Taltz - I started last May and it’s changed my entire world.

I have to admit that those first two doses in my dermatoligist’s office were TORTURE! A technician was watching me so I decided to inject in my upper thigh. The first dose took me by complete surprise as I didn’t expect it to be that painful. I did the second one in my other thigh and just steeled myself for it to be over! I had a small red bump in both injection sites but they quickly dissipated.

Since then I have the doses delivered to my home and it’s become very routine. I take the dose out of the refrigerator about 30 minutes before administering - and through trial and error I have found that the best place to inject is in my lower belly a couple of inches from the belly button. It stings for a second but quickly goes away. Because the dose is now once a month I just alternate between the right and left side with very little reaction.

Sorry to hear that you’ve had a more difficult time - all I can say is that I’m now 100% clear so if you can experience the same results as mine it’s so well worth it!

Best of luck in your journey.

Sheryl

Hi Sheryl  Welcome to the club. Thank you for chiming in. I’m glad to hear that taltz has got you clear, I hope that it continues to keep working for you  .... it is life changing I agree getting clearance. So it’s always good to hear success stories .... Taltz seems to be proving a very successful treatment
