Methotrexate experience

Hi - been on Fumaderm since Oct 16 - progressed from white to blue tablets but not passing 120mg X 3 per day.( Liver results and extended 11 weeks travel thro US suspended dose to higher levels ) .
Following return had to suspend for 5 weeks due to significant foot surgery ....restarted but after 3 weeks severe itching thro body - face ,ears, head, ands etc ......saw my Derm Dr today and she says we are not really progressing with FUM tablets ......altho some improvement on the PS but not enough with going fwd on a higher dose.


So we are moving along the road and kicking in with Methotrexate........so just wondering if any folks have had any experience good or bad going along this road

Hello Vincent.

My experience was awful. Felt sick and nauseous all the time, it also made me feel like a zombie and gave me bad mood swings. My personal opinion is it shouldn’t be used for psoriasis today as there are many other treatments available.

But some do ok with it and it's a like or hate treatment by most of our members. Not many love it though.

There are lots of threads about it, if you put it in the search facility Search you will find a few good threads.

*I changed your subject as we have a lot of methotrexate threads and it could get lost in searches.

Hi Vincent and welcome to the Club   
I'm not going to be much use to you, I can't have MTX due to previous medical issues, but there are a good spread of people who have been on it with varying degrees of success. Some have had many years of subdued Psoriasis while as many have deemed the stuff to be poison. It all depends on the individual, but I look forward to seeing how you fair on the stuff

Hi Vincent ...I was on Methotrexate and finished on 25mg once a week and folic acid 4 days after the Methotrexate ....I found it made me lethargic and nauseous and generally unwell and after a while I gave it up as I said I would rather have the disease .....that's when I got Fumaderm .....it's a shame you had a bad experience with it as it has given me my longest period of clearance in 50 years ....I will be very reluctant to give it up ....
Possibly your problem with Fumaderm was the on and off way you were able to take it ...and not doing the build up in the right way ......I never had the itching ....for me it was flushing and abdominal cramps that passed as my body got used to Fumaderm

I wish you good luck on Methotrexate and look forward to hearing how well it works for you

Basically it is a load of bulls**t of your doc.
It is very well possible and even very common that the DMF only kicks in fully at 6 tablets, here in NL, were we can go higher with an equal medication often only after 8 tablets.
This behaviour between DMF and the patient should be very well known to a good dermatologist.

Personally I have been doing very well after my dosing went above the 5 pills for both Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis.

Good luck with the dermatologists choice for MTX. My experiences with that stuff are bad.

It's the dermatologists choice, with a motivation that is crappy on all sides.

Methotrexate is not a bad drug for quite a lot of people and works really well but like ALL other drugs it can have side effects for some . I took it for 9 years, 6 by oral and just over 3 by injection which is much better if you have the option. I eventually had side effects that manifested as stomach problems and had to stop it but it worked very well. I have had many different treatments and can bring to mind one that after a week or so I thought I was dying with side effects that far outweighed anything that I had with MTX.

I agree with Caroline. If you failed the liver test, why are we moving to MTX? It's notorious hard on your liver.
