Psoriasis and pregnancy

I was hoping to be one of those people you hear about who's psoriasis gets better during pregnancy, but I appear not to have this luck. I have an appointment with my consultant in January so will update you all then. I'm assuming the psoriais cannot be of any danger to the baby?

Sorry to hear that it's coming back Amanda, it's possibly the people that don't have the sickness that you have suffered and that feel well throughout, that have the psoriasis clear up naturally... Just my theory

I'm  sure that psoriasis will not hurt your unborn child,

Your dermatologist will advise in January but in the meantime you could watch your food intake and avoid certain foods see this thread The anti-inflamatory food pyramid
Try avoiding the nightshade foods as well

Thanks Jim. Forgive my ignorance, but what are nightshade foods? I'll need to look into the diet you've linked me to! I think I've seen it before, but not given it much thought.

I'm not saying it will fix you Amanda but you have nothing to lose if there are things there that you can enjoy

The nightshade foods to avoid are ( and this is not a complete list)
Tomatoes
Potatoes
Peppers including chilli peppers
Aubergine

It's basically a change of lifestyle ...I couldn't do it there are to many things I couldn't give up
But I'm not in your position I might think differently if I were pregnant

No your baby is safe and won't be effected. Some say it's genetic but it doesn't mean your child will get it later, but at the moment he/she is safe and cosy.  

Nightshades (Solanaceae) are known to be bad for a few problems including psoriasis and inflammatory. It is found in Vegetables and plants, and it's said that if you avoid them it can help. I can't confirm it myself as I like most of them on the list and it's difficult to avoid them in some foods.

Pimentos
Potatoes (sweet potatoes are okay)
Sweet Peppers (black pepper is okay)
Thai Peppers

Jerusalem Cherries
Pepino
Tamarillo
Tomatoes

Modified Food Starch:
   Starch (*If it doesn’t say where it’s derived from, check with the manufacturer)
   Yeast (*Most yeast contains potato, both baking yeast and beer yeast. **Red Star yeast does not contain potato.)
   Shellac Wax (comes from Lac beetle that feeds on Wolfberry plants, found on shiny fruit and veggies, commonly not listed in ingredients)
   Palmitate Vitamin A (In margarine and milk, it’s derived from potatoes.)

A lot of processed foods contain potato starch that's why it is difficult to avoid.

It's also in Tobacco, and some plants but obviously you won't be eating those.

All in all the Solanaceae consists of around 2,700 species.

I've been investigating recipes over the past few days but really struggling to find anything. A lot seem to be American or maybe I'm looking In the wrong places. I have been practising by cooking over the past few days (looking at the pyramid, id be in a lot of trouble with the ingredients I used . I have already increased my water Intake over the past few weeks luckily! Will keep you all updated (just nudge me if i havent)

Jim, I enjoyed reading the thread you linked me to, I think Fred has sent me this before. I'm not sure if my skin is triggered by emotional stress as I noted Hannah got better post baby when feeling relaxed and breastfeeding. This is something I would like to talk to my dermatologist about regarding my options for after the baby comes. I would like to go back on methotrexate or Stelera as I've had good results on mtx in the past, but also swaying towards stelera as I never got to give it a proper try before.

Just to give an update, my dermatology department phoned me this morning and have offered me an earlier appointment with one of the junior doctors for next week to keep me going until my appointment at the end of the month with my consultant. Now I just need to try and track down where the department is as they recently moved hospitals

That's the problem with big hospitals, everywhere looks the same  

Now I'm not pushing my fumaderm, but have a word about it with your dermatologist, it could help your other conditions ( I am being pushy aren't I   )

I am not suggesting giving Fumaderm to a baby, but for Amanda to discuss with her dermatologist AFTER THE BABY IS BORN taking Fumaderm for her own psoriasis and it may help her other conditions
