Hi Hellosimon

I gave up smoking 3 years ago- no difference to skin. I smoked 20 plus a day, no difference at all.

Alcohol, well probably would have went out of my mind with sleep depravation without my beloved drambuie!!
Now I'm on stelera , I don't need it to get a couple of hours sleep.  I would say when I go on a girls night out and drink far to much, I do notice my skin does not like it at all.  Being a sensible drinker has no effect either way.

Stress, think it does not help, my P appeared around the time my mother was diagnosed with the big one , but I was also entering my teens and had, had a few throat infections, now and again. Probably no more than others but they whipped my tonsils out for good measure anyway ! Tongue

I was on acetretin when I liked to socialise, so I drank, bloods were fine but my hair did start to fall out, so gave that up.

I have never smoked, though I like the smell of cigarettes and tobacco when it is not on fire yet. It reminds me of my granddad who had a very tiny cigare store. It always smelled so nice over there, good memories.
I don't drink much, but regularly in the sense that I like a glass of wine with dinner. On parties never more than three, so I have never been drunk (sounds quite boring huh Tongue ).
I think it is a basic flaw of doctors to instruct you to stop smoking and drinking. There are no real thoughts behind it, they learned at school that smoking is bad, well I think it is, and drinking also, but I also think that they have never seen the statistics regarding the different diseases. Perhaps because there are none.

About psoriasis and stress.. I am pretty sure that with me the trigger was the stress, quite some years ago so I grew over it, but a few years of stress with me marked the beginning of my PsA.

You know Caroline I have more wondered about stress during my psoriasis like if I get stressed does it worsen. But your post made me think back as to when I first noticed signs of psoriasis (only the doctors first said it was dermatitis) In May of 2011 my mom passed away, also during that same few days my daughter's husband pretty much just up and left her, leaving her and three kids in a not so good situation financially (which of course we helped them but it was a very stressful time). And although I can't be certain since I didn't document the exact times, that does coincide with about the time I had the first signs of psoriasis. Interesting. I'll see if I can't go back through medical records and see when I first asked the doctor about what was going on.

Studies I have read over the years show how smoking might affect psoriasis on a biological level are complicated by the thousands of ingredients in cigarette smoke. Nicotine is a possible culprit in altering the immune system and possibly skin cell growth, as well as directly affecting skin inflammation.

Studies I have read also shows young men who are heavy drinkers are at a higher risk for psoriasis, but other studies have shown that drinking alcohol has a negative effect on clinical response to treatment and on the likelihood of remission."

Studies also show stress from having the disease can be a culprit to more breakouts and over weight causing immune response to change over time. Even strep throat has caused P. in many cases. Strep is a known as a virus, always treated by antibiotics. Does the antibiotics cause the P. due to shutting down all the good bacteria in the second brain the stomach leaving only yeast? ( pyloria) Or is it the swelling in the brain from the fever as antibodies attack the virus? This can be another way to identify causes that make the immune system attack the body. As in psoriatic arthritis and many other autoimmune diseases.

Yet nothing has ever made my P. worse from drinking alcohol or foods. Sunshine or low vit-D3 is a major factor for many immune diseases.
Buy hey I digress .

Perhaps there is a correlation, I should really stop drinking wine and find out.. Sometime.. Rolleyes

Ha ha Big Grin
Actually, I haven't been drinking much at all recently, maybe a glass of wine a week. Sadly no visible difference to the p. It's not especially a health decision, it was getting expensive lol
