I have moved Karaokekings question to its own thread  here rather than take ccar's thread off topic

Hi Jim. Here is my question. As i said in my introduction i am at the moment in Tenerife. I will be going back to the U/K at the end of April, so when i go back i am going to see my doctor and as about Fumaderm. Will i have to ask him to see a Dermatologist or can he prescribe them himself.
You also mention about being firm with the doctor, so can i insist on seeing the Dermotologist, if he won´t prescribe Fumaderm. Now i only have it mildly, so will that be relivant, on getting it prescribed.. Thanks again.
My answer to this is if you only have  mild psoriasis you are unlikely to get it prescribed unless you can convince you dermatologist that the psoriasis is profoundly affecting your quality of life.

To get Fumaderm on the NHS you will first have to be refered by your GP to a dermatologist. A GP cannot prescribe it as it is not a licensed drug yet and only available from specialists

My suggestion is to see your doctor and tell him of your concern about using steroid creams and they are doing little or no good and sunlight is damaging your skin ..
Your doctor should refer you to see a specialist but the specialist will decide what to try. And to be honest I don't think you will be offered Fumaderm but may be offered Methotrexate.

Thanks again for your reply. I get your point about the tablets. As i asked already what are the other members using if not tablets. I have found that only Dovobet gave me any success at all. Even though it didn´t clear it up it has kept it at bay.`So it`s a shame you can´t use it for long periods. So i wanted to know the best cream anyone else is using, even though i know everyone doesn't get the same results with the same treatments.

Hi Karaokeking Big Grin

Firstly, good luck with seeing your consultant. I hope they come up with something that works well for you.

I have tried so many steroid creams & currently have four I use for various different areas. The only one I really noticed an improvement with (other than just 'maintaining' the patches) is Dermovate. It can be used on the body but only short term as its really strong. My doctor is reulctant to give me repeat prescriptions for it as I used to go through a tube in a week but only because I had so many patches and the tube is TINY!

Hope it all goes well!

Kath

Hi Cath. Four different medications, hey, that must get you down. I wonder why you can´t use a lot of these creams and ointments, for any length of time. What are the repercussions. I was using dovobet for years and only found out that i shouldn´t have used it for so long, my doctor didn´t advise me otherwise. Again i don´t know what the dangers were, but i don´t think anything has changed healthwise. Apart from my PS, i feel fit as a fiddle.

As i have said i go over from the U/K, to Tenerife for the winter, and when i get back home i make an appointment for a general checkup, which they seem to call it an M.O.T. they check my blood pressure, cholesterol, sugar, liver, kidney´s, and prostrate, i always get the response, no action to be taken, which is what i want to hear. I am 74, and i have never smoked, so apart from the PS, i am quite healthy. I will ask my doctor to let me try Dermovate, but if the doctor won´t let you use it for a prolonged time, what then, do you have to try a different cream. I wonder if the doctors just look down a list of treatments and just pluck one out of the blue. Surely there must be an ointment or cream, that works better than other ones, and that we can use it indefinitely, even though i know one doesn´t suit all.

Why i wonder why they don´t suggest taking tablets, as ivé said before, it´s a lot easier, than spending time splodging cream all over your body, and then putting your clothes on.

The main danger with using the steroid ointments like Dovabet and dermovate is they will thin your skin causing it to bruise and tear easily
Much safer is Dovanex which is a vitamin D derivative .they tend to alternate between Dovabet and Dovonex.
Which I found confusing such similar names but totaly different ingredients

Be carefull with Dermovate it  is a very strong ointment it was always my last resort. I was prescribed it for years ( hence my thin skin )

Tablets are easier for us to take, but unfortunately they all need regular monitoring and have more side effects , whereas creams are less problematical and tend to be easy to manage.
So they only give them to people with moderate to severe psoriasis
