Hi everyone, I am a newbie to this group but have had psoriasis for most of my 57 years. For the past 20 years I have been treated very successfully with methotrexate - tablets mostly but weekly injection for the past 5 years. My dermatologist has told me to stop now though due to recurring sinusitis which has been so bad I needed surgery for it last month. I am using dovobet for now but he has given me literature on acitretin and suggested I start this in a few months. I am very nervous about using dovobet and reading the side effects of acitretin scares me too!
I know I am getting on a bit and maybe shouldn't be so vain, but one of the side effects was hair loss or thinning and as if psoriasis isn't bad enough already losing my hair would be devastating. Any thoughts??

Welcome  Welcome  Freckles   I guess you have been reading the posts here about hair loss, but don't be put off by that it doesn't happen to everyone and if it does tell the dermatologist who will offer you something different and your hair will grow back again
Have a look at RE: Acitrecin - week 1  where Kelly tells of her experience

As I said not everyone suffers the side effects and if you do and it gets bad then change, but it's well worth trying it has a high success rate ...you have to remember people come here with problems .....we rarely get someone who comes here to say how good a treatment is unless they have been on before with a problem,

I forgot to add if you have any questions just shout there is usually a friendly member about to talk to

You are very welcome. We are just people like yourself. There is no advertising, sponsorship or requests for donations. It makes us unique and the Only psoriasis website out there without an ulterior motive, we're just here to help each other and you are now part of it.  Thumb

Just dive on in, and should you venture to the [Group Specific] you will find I'm the only sensible one here.  Smile

Indeed Freckles, that is the good point of this forum, it makes you feel that there are a lot more people struggling with the same problem.
And it gives the possibility to talk, share experiences, share feelings and share tips.
So a big welcome to psoriasisclub.
Welcome

Caroline

Hi Freckles  Wave
To put your mind at rest Acitretin is not normally the monster its wrap sheet suggests it is.
You only have a couple of years on me and I have been on Acitretin since April and yes I have had side effects, dry lips, peeling hands and feet(gross) sticky palms but the PS is receding and to me that is worth the inconvenience of the side effects.
Give it some serious thought, read up on peoples experiences and return to your Dermy armed with the information to make an informed choice.
I can't have Mtx but from what I have read I would run a mile from it.
Just be aware that we are all so very different when it comes to had this disease effects us and how the treatments do as well

It is worth sticking some posts in to allow you to start reading peoples journals. These are real live people with honest experiences. I have learned more about PS in 6 months than I have in the last 6 years.

Oh don't forget to join us off topic for some lightweight banter  Thumb

Glad you found us as well Freckles .....there is a lot to nosey around and never any reason to feel alone, there is usually someone here to answer questions,  although we don't have all the answers there is a great wealth of experience here, I hope you enjoy the site and if you do delve into the off topic section, I can assure you of a warm welcome .......and don't believe anyone that tells you they are sensible  Big Grin  unless it's me then it's true
