Hello and  Welcome to Psoriasis Club.

It's said giving up smoking can help but all I got from it was extra weight. But you won't find a cure, it can be managed but no cure.

As for the cost you should be able to get treated on the NHS, are you seeing a dermatologist?

Regards.

Fred.

Hi Ger and   Welcome to the club such a shame you developed psoriasis at the same time you gave up smoking, it might have been the trigger it's impossible to tell, but you have found a great place for friendly advice.
My best suggestion to you is to get referred to a dermatologist, if your doctor is not giving you anything a dermatologist will take you seriously and get you on a treatment that can clear your skin

I would try and manage without starting smoking again as you can't turn the clock back
Look around the site and see the treatments that are available and talk to your doctor

Coming here is a good step as you will find the site packed with information and members experiences
We also have a vibrant off topic section for you to work through
I hope you will find a treatment to control psoriasis for you

Was it Dovonex.. Or Dovabet ... Your doctor can only give you creams that should only be used short term he will try to keep you on them at least that was my experience

Yes I would talk to your doctor and tell him you want to see a dermatologist and explain that you are not getting clearance with creams and see what he says

Welcome!

There is no miracles and no cures sadly. But there is hope and treatment, the key is finding what works best for you. There is a lot of info here on the forum and it's good to learn about the different treatments as it will help when talking to your doctor.

I'm in the US but was also prescribed creams to start with (that seems to be the normal approach.) I didn't find that prescribed creams helped much more than over the counter moisturizers. I'd definitely get back in touch with your doctor and see if he/she will try something else. And after 2 years of not smoking (congrats!), I wouldn't go back to it.

Yes Jim is right see his post above it sounds like Dovobet or Dovonex you can read more about them here: Dovobet And Dovonex (What's the difference ?)

He is also right your GP can only prescribe creams and will continue to do so. Tell him/Her that you want to be referred to a dermatologist they are much better suited to treat you and can offer more than a GP. (A dermatologist is available on the NHS as long as your GP send you so you don't need to worry about costs).

Oh and Kat is also right. Don't go back to smoking. When I said "all I got from it was extra weight" I'm also a lot better off health wise in regard to my breathing and we all know in the long term the sooner we come off it the better our body will be. Run

My P started with a stressful time in my life - possibly giving up smoking was stressful for you and was the trigger.
I would advise if you are given any steroid cream to use it properly as it can completely clear things up. If you use it one day, forget the next etc it won't be so effective and in the end might stop working for you at all. (Well that was my experience anyway!)

Good luck and welcome!

Hi Ger. don't rely on a GP as they know a little about a lot what you need is a dermatologist who is an expert in P. When I first started with P I found that before it got to bad that UV treatment worked quite well. See the expert and don't worry and don't go back to the smokes !!!
