Hi all!
I hope I don't sound like too much of a know it all.   Tongue   These are just some observations.

This is really for the newbies. The basics of what to avoid and what to eat.  So here's some of what I've picked up over the years.  Years of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) leading to years of Psoriasis.

The short version.  Avoid or cut back on:  Sugar, Salt, foods made with or containing Yeast, Grains and Dairy.
Store bought salad dressing has chemical in it that is used in windshield washer fluid.  So my health food store friend tells me.

I cannot comment on nightshade vegetables, I eat them, never really noticed a problem.  Maybe someone else can comment on them.

If you must have a sweetener try black strap molasses or honey.  I think molasses is better, but not sure yet.

Cut back on salt.

IMHO salt is harmful to Vitamin C.  There is a sailor who spent six months in the artic, no fruit and no Vitamin C, his ship locked in ice.  He wrote how he did not get scurvy and yet the sailors of old did.  The reason he believed was salt.  They preserved food with salt back then for long voyages.  Humans , guinea pigs and apes can't make Vitamin C.  We need this vitamin to heal and salt is in pretty much everything these days!

Wine, beer and alcohol are made with yeast.  Candida is a yeast and under normal circumstances isn't a problem.  The good bacteria keeps it in check, but if you take broad spectrum antibiotics, look out!  I ended up IBS, along with a mental map of where every washroom in the city was!  Try to avoid broad spectrum antibiotics, if you do have to take them get a children's type of probiotic and eat lots of garlic.  Not all probiotics are the same, you have to start with the type that first colonizes the bowels.

I was watching a TV show on inflammation and "genetically modified wheat" was the culprit.  It also points out, we are not cows, we only have one stomach, you wouldn't normally go out in a field and eat wheat!

Grains waiting to be shipped out are stored in silos were they get moldy.  I love bread though.  I can handle a breakfast bagel, but when I buy a loaf, I tend to eat too much of it during the day and my symptoms get worse.

Also people on here mention gluten.  I always toast my bagel/bread, since heat breaks down gluten and is less of a problem to digest.  And I sprinkle garlic powder on toast and just about everything else.  Garlic kills yeast and is a prebiotic (a food for the good bacteria).

I take organic milk in my coffee.  Milk is known to be mucus forming in the bowels and caused me severe constipation and is generally, bad for the skin.  Humans are the only species to consume milk as adults except for mice they like cheese.   Tongue

Ginger root is also very good and may be the reason my psoriasis was never all that bad.  I do drink lots of ginger ale.

It is a potent antiviral.  If taken regularly it is known to thicken the epithelium layer ( that's the slimy layer on our intestinal tracts that keeps pathogens and their toxins out, "selective absorption".  Like the slime on a fish protects it from water borne diseases.   The epithelium layer starts to thin in your early twenties.  Asian folk eat ginger, like we in the west eat potatoes.  I wonder how many of the 1.3 billion Chinese have psoriasis?  If anyone knows please post it.  The ginger root in your grocery store is a product of China.

I just did a quick search, didn't find any stats, but I did find this "GlaxoSmithKline Plc " is joining with the Chinese ...."The world’s biggest drug makers are turning to ancient Chinese remedies to boost product pipelines."

And this.... "Glaxo’s herbal drugs efforts will focus initially on immune disorders such as psoriasis, a chronic disease that causes scaly skin, and drugs that treat inflammation of the digestive system, according to Zhang Xun, Shanghai-based head of research and development for the company’s global natural products unit."  This was in Dec 11, 2012 is their a drug from them out now and is ginger apart of it?

Ancient Chinese Secret is not just for laundry.   Big Grin   You go now, mind you own business.  Big Grin

Good information, very interesting and informative. I just wish my will power was better Tongue

From my doctor and a nutritionist, I know what NOT to eat (which is quite a bit of what I like to eat) but what is difficult (for me) is the what TO eat. I like bread, milk, and even when it comes to veggies, potatoes and corn are up there with favorites (too much starch). I don't get enough protein and I like too much salt (although I've gotten better). I'm hopeless I think.

But, you've given me some things to think about so thank you.

That is exactly what DMF does, which is already around for more that 30 years.
To my opinion, equal to yours, there is a strong relation in between psoriasis and the way we digest food and use it as the source for our energy.

Very good to read your observations.

Hi guys!

Short version: I think psoriasis is a virus and citric acid helps keep it in check.

Has anyone looked at citric acid?  I did do a google search "psoriasisclub.org citric acid" and it turned up a few hits, but not no mention of it's anti viral properties.

That's how I search the site for specific topics.

My face isn't normally itchy, if your immune system is overworked, with a cold, other pathogens try to take advantage, hence the itch and could that itch be viruses?

How come my symptoms weren't that bad for years, up until a few months ago, what happened, what was different?  Is it my diet?  And then I realized something, I had been inadvertently consuming vast amounts of sugar over the last year and a half.  I had quit smoking and would consume way to many lollypops daily.  Well It helped me quit smoking, oral fixation or something.  I had quit the lollypops three months ago, after seeing a vid on how bad cane sugar really is.

Anyway why wasn't the psoriasis flaring up during the past year and a half with all that sugar?  I think it might be the citric acid in the lollypops.  And there's citric acid in ginger ale, which might account for all the other years.  Plus I consume broccoli regularly which is also very anti viral.  Broccoli will stop 98% of hsv1 (cold sores) outbreaks.  And ginger is anti viral too!

Back to citric acid.  Here's some interesting quotes:

"Citric acid exists in greater than trace amounts in a variety of fruits and vegetables, most notably citrus fruits. Lemons and limes have particularly high concentrations of the acid; it can constitute as much as 8% of the dry weight of these fruits (about 47 g/L in the juices[12])."

"The dominant use of citric acid is as a flavoring and preservative in food and beverages, especially soft drinks."

 *** And this quote! ***

"Citric acid is used as one of the active ingredients in the production of antiviral tissues."

  "Tissues that fight germs

Kimberly-Clark says new Kleenex three-ply tissue uses middle antiseptic layer to kill germs.
July 14, 2004: 1:00 PM EDT

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Kleenex is stepping up its bid in the fight against the common cold.

The tissue maker Wednesday introduced an anti-viral facial tissue meant to kill the virus believed to cause colds.

Kimberly-Clark (KMB: up $0.33 to $66.30, Research, Estimates), maker of the famous facial tissue, said the new tissue includes a moisture-activated middle layer treated with an anti-viral formula.

When moisture from a cough or sneeze hits the middle layer, the formula begins working immediately, killing nearly all the cold and flu viruses in the tissue within 15 minutes, according to the company.

The patented formula is made from citric acid and sodium lauryl sulfate, ingredients found in everyday consumer products, the company said. Citric acid is used to flavor soft drinks, while sodium lauryl sulfate is found in many shampoos and detergents.

The tissues are expected to be on the shelves by early October and will be available in two sizes, 60 and 120 to a box, with suggested retail prices of $1.39 and $1.99, respectively."

If you made it this far, thanks for reading, you get a cookie!  Tongue

I've had this disease for many years.  Why do some suffer more than others.  Diet? Genetics?  I have an aunt back in Britain covered in it.  My brother has facial psoriasis, he has less symptoms than me!  He eats broccoli more often than me and ginger ale too.  So an anti viral diet showing good results, may suggest the root cause of this disease is viral.  Merely my opinion.  I will continue to follow my diet and see how it goes.  Re stocks, Is it up?  Put me down for a cool thou.   Tongue

Hi john
I don't think anyone knows the answer as to why some get none and some get smothered in it
Stick with your beliefs as to what will work. I will watch with interest as you progress along the natural route. It will do no harm and may well be the answer for you. I hope so, you certainly seem to have done your homework ... I will hope it pays off for you

I get a cookie,Thunder I don't know about the citric acid but I can't eat oranges, lemons, tomato juice and the likes. My stomach acts up when I eat anything with acid. Then I bring more problems on myself.I think when a person that has psoriasis gets an infection as I did once I had sepsis it spilled into my blood stream. After that my skin really got bad.So who knows what triggers it.Stress doesn't help but how can you not get stressed with this crappy disease.
