Short version: I think psoriasis is a virus and citric acid helps keep it in check.

Has anyone looked at citric acid?  I did do a google search "psoriasisclub.org citric acid" and it turned up a few hits, but not no mention of it's anti viral properties.

That's how I search the site for specific topics.

My face isn't normally itchy, if your immune system is overworked, with a cold, other pathogens try to take advantage, hence the itch and could that itch be viruses?

How come my symptoms weren't that bad for years, up until a few months ago, what happened, what was different?  Is it my diet?  And then I realized something, I had been inadvertently consuming vast amounts of sugar over the last year and a half.  I had quit smoking and would consume way to many lollypops daily.  Well It helped me quit smoking, oral fixation or something.  I had quit the lollypops three months ago, after seeing a vid on how bad cane sugar really is.

Anyway why wasn't the psoriasis flaring up during the past year and a half with all that sugar?  I think it might be the citric acid in the lollypops.  And there's citric acid in ginger ale, which might account for all the other years.  Plus I consume broccoli regularly which is also very anti viral.  Broccoli will stop 98% of hsv1 (cold sores) outbreaks.  And ginger is anti viral too!

Back to citric acid.  Here's some interesting quotes:

"Citric acid exists in greater than trace amounts in a variety of fruits and vegetables, most notably citrus fruits. Lemons and limes have particularly high concentrations of the acid; it can constitute as much as 8% of the dry weight of these fruits (about 47 g/L in the juices[12])."

"The dominant use of citric acid is as a flavoring and preservative in food and beverages, especially soft drinks."

 *** And this quote! ***

"Citric acid is used as one of the active ingredients in the production of antiviral tissues."

  "Tissues that fight germs

Kimberly-Clark says new Kleenex three-ply tissue uses middle antiseptic layer to kill germs.
July 14, 2004: 1:00 PM EDT

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Kleenex is stepping up its bid in the fight against the common cold.

The tissue maker Wednesday introduced an anti-viral facial tissue meant to kill the virus believed to cause colds.

Kimberly-Clark (KMB: up $0.33 to $66.30, Research, Estimates), maker of the famous facial tissue, said the new tissue includes a moisture-activated middle layer treated with an anti-viral formula.

When moisture from a cough or sneeze hits the middle layer, the formula begins working immediately, killing nearly all the cold and flu viruses in the tissue within 15 minutes, according to the company.

The patented formula is made from citric acid and sodium lauryl sulfate, ingredients found in everyday consumer products, the company said. Citric acid is used to flavor soft drinks, while sodium lauryl sulfate is found in many shampoos and detergents.

The tissues are expected to be on the shelves by early October and will be available in two sizes, 60 and 120 to a box, with suggested retail prices of $1.39 and $1.99, respectively."

If you made it this far, thanks for reading, you get a cookie!  Tongue

I get a cookie,Thunder I don't know about the citric acid but I can't eat oranges, lemons, tomato juice and the likes. My stomach acts up when I eat anything with acid. Then I bring more problems on myself.I think when a person that has psoriasis gets an infection  as I did once I had sepsis it spilled into my blood stream. After that my skin really got bad.So who knows what triggers it.Stress doesn't help but how can you not get stressed with this crappy disease. Wall

As you say Glenda who knows what triggers it and it is a crappy disease . But thunder is on a mission and testing out his theory . Which I am going to follow after I get my cookie Big Grin

Looks like Thunder needs to hand out a bunch of cookies! Big Grin

Not totally sure I trust Kleenex in that the middle will stop the virus (paraphrasing) because they of course have a marketing department who might make it sound better than it is.

Not sure that I agree that a virus can cause psoriasis, but I do think it's all tied in to the immune system so a virus could indeed affect someone with psoriasis differently than if they didn't have it. But.... I can't really say one way or the other only my own personal thoughts about it as I haven't tested anything.

Hi guys Smile

Yes I'll spring for cookies.

Glenda says..."I get a cookie, Thunder I don't know about the citric acid but I can't eat oranges, lemons, tomato juice and the likes. My stomach acts up when I eat anything with acid. So very true!

My mother almost died from sepsis ( blood poisoning) from cutting her toenails and nicked the skin.

I use to get severe heartburn. Had it for six months and then I saw a documentary on TV about a nasty little bacteria called H-pylori. It's the cause of ulcers! Well sort of, the body produces stomach acid four times the normal strength. The body ends up causing the ulcers, trying and get rid of it. H-pylori is in our drinking water. I stick with bottled water now. People in India cook with turmeric, as certain spices can kill it. I got a fifteen day course of two antibiotics and a proton pump inhibitor( stomach acid suppresser). Worked great.

That was the one time antibiotics worked great. The last time I got amoxicillin, for cosmetic dental work of all things. And ended up with IBS and a lot diarrhea. Udo's Toddlers Blend Probiotics, stopped the diarrhea and got my intestinal flora back to normal.

I'm not sure either, I use a Kleenex, I throw it away, I wasn't planning of saving them! Smile That was a quote to point out, citric acid is antiviral.

Hi Jim, I was having a good laugh with your joke thread the other day. I have to get back there! Clap

This is my third attempt at posting a comment on this thread, so let's hope it works this time!

I though this was an interesting read. I personally think Vitamin C is underestimated by a lot of people. I find I get less colds since I started take a daily Vit C tablet.

I've also heard a lot of people swear that dairy can exacerbate skin conditions. I'm not sure just how much I agree, since my psoriasis became severe when I'd cut down on the diary that I eat (which was coincidental). I'm still not a big consumer of it - I take a drop of milk in my tea, and I wouldn't eat cereal every day. I do eat yoghurt occasionally though, and I love cheese every once in a while when cooking. I love it too much to cut it out completely and see if it makes a difference.

Yes. I looked at citric acid. And I do not believe in psoriasis being viral. The factors that seem to cause psoriasis, to my opinion are far from being viral.
I composed an answer over here RE: Is psoriasis a viral problem
