hi all, I’m new to the forum. I started taking Skilerence three weeks ago and Ive worked my way up to 120 mg per day so far. Side effects are ok at the moment. A bit of skin irritation but only lasts 10-20mins so bearable. The only thing is that my skin looks worse! Is this something that can happen? Does it look worse before it gets better or does it take a while to kick in if it works? Confused.

Confused.Hi Kerry I'm on skilarence and before I started on that I was on fumaderm for nearly 7 years which is the same basic ingredient DMF . The drug is known to take a while to work and I know the reason for the slow build up is so your body can adjust to the dmf . One 120mg tablet a day is early to expect too much change but keep on with the build up and hope the side effects don't get too bad. And you should start to see some improvements in the next few weeks Yes simetimes it does get worse before getting better but when it kicks in it can continue to work for many years without any restrictions Good luck and do stay in touch and let us know how it's working and ask as many questions as you like we will always be pleased to answer Oh and welcome ![]() Jim

Hi Kerry,
Welcome to psoriasisclub. ![]() Jim already said the most known things about DMF. Indeed it is too early to see results, that only happens with very few people. DMF is a slow medication. Give it at least six weeks to see results. I am not really sure, but I think that I once read in the Dutch information about DMF, that symptoms can shortly increase. The fact that something is changing is already a sign that the medication is doing something. I have never heard of people who had an increase of Psoriasis because of DMF, either it works or it doesn’t work. So keep on going en keep us informed. Cheers, Caroline

Thanks for the warm welcome. I guess I’m just having a flare up. I will keep you all up to date though. X

XHopefully it will pass quickly and the Skilarence will start to show results, I don't know how long you have suffered with psoriasis before being put on skilarence or what other treatments you have tried. But know in all the many years I've suffered with psoriasis this is the only thing that has given me any long term clearance . So my advice is be patient, which is easier said than done. Jim ![]()

X I don't know about Skilarence, but yes a flare up during trying a new treatment can be misleading. If it is a flare up it should start going down, if stays the same for a week + or gets worse then you may have to review it, but as you have no side effects I would keep going for now. Welcome to Psoriasis Club by the way. ![]() Regards. Fred.

Hello Kerry ,
I had full dosage 6 x 120 mg for day ( 720 mg ) and unfortunately i couldn't see the expected results. Two months of treatments. Consider that i had insiglificant side effects , almost nothing and my blood test results were for 3 times surprisingly good. No lowering of lymphocytes and leukocytes. I had many moments with big stress and this surely didn't help me. Today at 17:30 i will meet my Dermatologist and i'm curious to see what he will decide for me ! Fingers crossed for you. Regards Marco ![]()

There is a 70% chance that DMF will do something for you.
Unfortunately for Marco, he is in the 30% of people who do not react to DMF. Certainly to hope for him that his dermatologist comes up with something that will fit him.

Ive had psoriasis since I was 13yrs and I’m now 43yrs. I’ve tried everything. Before this I was on Methotrexate which did nothing. Now I’ve finished having children it’s time for the big guns. Fingers crossed it works.

Hi Kerry, DMF is not one of the big guns, those are the bio’s On the continent DMF is already around for 35 years, maybe even more. It is far better than the MTX poison, as DMF is non-toxic, and has a great working area. The drawbacks are that your intestines can go into cramps and that your lymphocytes possibly will lower which at the same time is an indication of the fact that it may be working. Cheers, Caroline. |
