As you may have seen in my past post Im having a lot of issues from side effects from the meds. The current situation that Im in has now happened almost exactly 1 year apart.

Basically 12 months ago my L elbow swelled out of nowhere. Was hot, reddish...Everything pointed to infection and we suspected cellulitis but the labs and fluid from my elbow were clean. Also there were no crystals or whatever so it wasn't gout. The fluid was not in the joint,so it can't really be drained. its just in all the tissue around my elbow. Its like a softbaball in my arm and has clear pitting edema. Took about 3 weeks to fully subside. Long story short a week ago, my R elbow swells up out of nowhere.....exactly the same as the last one, hot reddish, pitting edema etc. So at this point Im wondering if its Med related not environmental or infection. Since its unlikely gout or cellulitis. What do you guys think it can be? I appreciate any input or even guesses.

Last time it happened was on humira, this time is on simponi

Not something I have heard of from the use of a bio, but best to get it checked out by your doctor.

*I have removed your duplicate thread in prescribed treatments to save confusion.

I’m sorry awesomeman it’s not anything I have heard anyone here writing about and nothing I have experienced myself . I will put a note in the next newsletter to see if anyone has any ideas :tumb

Is it possibly a strain on your joint from over exertion

Its doubtful as the fluid is not really within the joint capsule.  The pitting edema is also about a third of the way down my forearm. The first week its extremely painful and after that its tolerable.  I do think its some type of gout caused by the biologics(ive heard of that) OR some type of reactive arthritis.....

My gamble is for the latter, I think it is arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis
It is an odd place though, one would expect it to be in the smaller joints of hands and feet.

Humira should have prevented it, but there are many people that after some time fail on Humira.

But... it could also be caused by the biological. It may be that the biological lowers a certain part of your immune system, thus giving that specific form of inflammation a chance. Apparantly it has no bacterial source as otherwise they would be able to find that.

IT also happened exactly 12 months apart.  I just have a feeling its from a biologic.  I just reviewed the old labs and noticed that the sample was inconclusive for crystals and bacteria.  My neutrophil count was elevated quite a bit.

It’s certainly a strange one as nothing shows up in tests you’ve had, I hope you manage to track down what’s causing it
Both the bios you have taken target the same TNF-a you could ask for another that targets different cells ones like Stelara which targets IL12 and 23
Or Cosentyx or Taltz that both target IL17 that might help

Could it possibly be vasculitis?
