Hi everyone, I am new to the boards but not new to psoriasis! I had it as a young child, went into remission, had outbreaks here and there, after giving birth, etc. and now I just had a strep throat and figured "uh oh" because last time I had it I got guttate psoriasis added to the plaque psoriasis I have already.....bummer
To let you know how long I had psoriasis on and off, Im now a senior citizen!

I have three kids, and none of them have it Thank G-d, and eight grandkids, and hopefully they wont get it either ...
but this outbreak makes me so upset.

what do any of you do for a strep outbreak?
do you go to tanning beds? I have been going there.

thanks, Joyce Cool

Hello Joyce,

Welcome to Psoriasisclub.

We are a friendly bunch of psoriasis sufferers, supporting each other with advice, sharing and wit.

I don't know exactly what you mean by a strep throat, I am Dutch, so sometimes I have to do research on the English terms they use over here.
But if you mean that you have a streptocokken infection, then I partly know what you mean.

Personally I don't have had them, but maybe others on the forum have had them.

There is research available that shows that streptococcus infections may be a (or even the) trigger for Psoriasis. The American scientist Lida Mattman has done quite some research on that.

What to do about it?
Well that is difficult to say. Vitamin D certainly is a moderator, so the tanning bed could be of help.

Anyway, others will jump in.

I hope you will enjoy the forum.

Caroline.

Hello Joyce  Welcome to Psoriasis Club.

I've never had a Strep outbreak so can't help.

As for tanning beds, I would only use one if prescribed. Yes they can work, but I think it's important to be monitored whilst using.

Try not to let this outbreak get you down, psoriasis has a nasty habit of getting worse when we feel down. Have a good look around the forum, you will find a very friendly bunch of people. And don't forget to visit [Group Specific] I'm sure you will find something there to take you mind of things.  Smile

Regards.

Fred.

Hi Joyce  Welcome to the club...yes the boards can be a bit daunting to find your way around, if in doubt just shout and someone will soon answer you  Thumb  but you will find us a helpful group of sufferers as Caroline has said ..we are good at sharing advice and personal experiences.
I'm also a grandparent, and the psoriasis has missed both daughters and so far no sign of it on the grandchildren  .... jim rushes to touch wood for luck
I know of strep throat, and Caroline is right about streptococcal infection often being the trigger for a flare of the disease ......I can't say if it affected me one way or another as I have always been covered in psoriasis, and was constantly as a youngster getting throats infections ....
I have my psoriasis kept at bay by the tablets I take and have been clear for over 5 years on Fumaderm ( not available in the US )

I'm not a lover of tanning beds as they can burn your already damaged skin...and cause other misery for you. But I'm not a judge and if you've done it before that's up to you ...but the best way to get controlled ultra violopet treatment is through your dermatologist

You say you fear an outbreak of guttate on top or existing plaque psoriasis, ..can I ask what treatment you are prescribed if any

A great way to keep in touch with the latest threads here and also the recent research into the disease is to subscribe to our free monthly newsletter here Groups just go there and click join group

Welcome Joyce! I haven't had a strep infection since being diagnosed but I could see where they could trigger a flare perhaps. Thankfully so far my kids and grandkids also are psoriasis free.

Tanning beds well... I think that is a personal choice. I will say after stopping UV the dermatologist I go to even mentioned going to them but of course also mentioned the increased risk of skin cancer vs not going to them. Natural sunshine also carries a risk after all. I think it's like most things, a little is good for you but too much starts to become bad.
