Yes they can help, but make sure you get one that you can regulate as it's not good to remove to much moisture.
We have just moved into a very old stone house that had been empty of over ten years, our dehumidifier was pulling out one container of water every night for around 4 weeks.
I've now installed a VMC (Ventilation Mécanique Contrôlée) This image explains what it does.
Since installing it we have noticed a huge difference in the air quality and comfort, we also no longer have moisture on the windows.
