Well that was the biggest f-ing waste of my time ever!
I'm feeling very down now and totally frustrated and angry :-(

Just seen a derm and what a joke, I seriously wonder where GPs keep their brain cells!

When I saw my GP and explained my cases history of light therapy methotrexate and cyclosporine and told him now pregnant and skin worse and with short time to go would like to see derm in the hope of getting an action plan together I very wrongly assumed I would of seen someone who could help!

So my derm appointment wasn't at the hospital, this didn't phase me to much as have been seen at a GPs before then had to go to hospital the following few days, this is how it went.....

Hi I have psoriasis which is very bad now and has gotten worse with my pregnancy, I'm not sure what the GP has sent you........

Derm...oh I see, umm well sometimes that can happen due to hormones, I see you stopped cyclosporine was this for pregnancy? we can certainly use some creams for you.

Me....yes I stopped that last october, I then had to go back for UVB as skin flared I finished that in feb and normally I would call the hospital direct but it was given by a different nurse and I was told to see GP if psoriasis got worse.

Derm......well when we give UVB we tend to see something called remission for some people this can last 5 years or so 

Me.....yes my remission with UVB is normally short lived

Derm......so we need to look at immune suppressants, methotrexate or cyclosporine 

Me......yes I have had both before and there has been talk of biologics being the next step for me, but I'm not so keen on that at the moment I would prefer to try the UVB again.

Derm......oh well I'm not linked with the hospital and can't arrange that for you but I can prescribe you steroids or cyclosporine.

Me......oh well I'm not sure why I am here then, I can't use steroids and I really don't want a prescription for cyclosporine with being pregnant, I asked the GP to refer I assumed it would be hospital linked!

Derm....if I'd known you were pregnant I would of advised you had gone to the hospital, would you like some creams? Are you using moisturiser?

Me....no I can't use creams, I'm also allergic to a lot of the moisturiser creams so I can only use epaderm mixed with savalon and I can only apply that a couple of times to stop my skin becoming sensitive to it!

Derm....oh well I'll send a letter to the hospital for you!!

I get up and walk out!!!!!

I'm so upset, I finally go to someone about my skin only to be passed around and not get any where other than just waste my time, and what has upset me the most is that my younger sister got a call last night to say a letter has come from the hospital for her to see a derm next month, a f-ing blind person would pay to see her psoriasis she has the smallest bits on her knees and elbows and I'm about 80% covered and causes me pain and burning....how is that fair??

I've really had enough now :-( what's the point?

What a D-head trying to give a pregnant women cyclopropane he didn't even look a me or ask if I plan on breast feeding!!!

Just wish I could drown my sorrows with some cheap wine and cigarettes :-( 

Hello Hanna, first off take some time out and calm down. I know it's annoying for you but you do have to get your Karma back! Don't forget the baby is listening to you.

OK I would say you need to kick up a fuss with the hospital and demand to speak to someone about the appointment and report him for prescribing medication that is not suitable What an idiot The hospitals in the UK don't like people who kick up a fuss, or threatening to go to the press. I know because I threatened to take Mrs Fred into hospital, find a bed, put her in it and sit there until the local newspaper turned up for an interview. (She had been turned away twice for a hysterectomy at the last minute, but my complaining got her in and sorted and we got a full apology.)

Another thing that could be worth looking into. I think in the UK you can switch to another area if you are not happy, maybe worth looking into. The guy is an absolute idiot and shouldn't be seeing people if he don't know what he is doing!

Also go along with your sister and sit in on her appointment, whilst there talk to the dermatologist about your last visit. If it's the same guy tell your sister to cancel and demand another dermatologist.

RE: "I've really had enough now :-( what's the point?" The point is, as you know psoriasis gets worse if you are wound up. So do what you have done, get it off your chest and start thinking about that new little life your about to see blossom.

I've given up Smoking but will gladly down a big glass of red for you.

I have also had a pointless and disappointing appointment with my dermatologist today, I felt positive before I got there, as I was told at my last appointment that since stelara was no longer working for me, it was time to try something else, remicade was discussed, I did some research and from what I found, it had positive results. I'm in so much pain with my skin at the minute, and I hate the looks I get from people, but I didn't get one ounce of sympathy at the hospital. My pasi is 32 so I deffo reach the criteria for remicade but I've been told I have to wait, as there is a long waiting list, I was offered exorex and refused point blank as last time I had a severe allergy to it, (which you would think the derm would know!) anyway I came away with no treatment, no indication of how long I have to wait, no follow up appointment and no hope :-( Why is it so difficult to get decent dermatologists!!

First of all Hanna, I really have pity for you.
What a situation you are in!
Indeed incredible how these doctors, dermatologists act. Would it be an idea to speak to an internist? A doctor that understands the internal working of a human being?
Another might be a reumatologist, as psoriasis is very well known for its origin being a problem with the immune system, not the skin.

Btw, I am Dutch, and I don't know what a GP is. I have the association with a Great Pr*ck, but I do not know if I am right, though it seems to fit your description. I make myself really angry when reading your story.

Anyway, we here at the forum are with you and understand your frustrations and anger, which is almost all we can do for now.
I you want to, I could try to check if my treatment, can be tried safely during brestfeeding a baby, but I can imagine that it might not be, as also doctors over here will remain on the safe side concerning babies.

In Hanna's case you are right, but a GP is a General Practitioner or Family Doctor. He /She knows a little bit about everything, but not a lot about a condition like psoriasis.

Google translate told me for you it's a Huisarts.

I have had a good cry about the whole thing now and got it all out of my system!

I went for a walk and met hubby on his way home went through it all with him, he then pointed out to me that hopefully by the time I finally get a hospital appointment I would of had baby and hopefully all my hormones will level out and skin may start to improve on its own.

He also pointed out that my belly is possibly so bad as the baby is there and increasing the temp of my skin making it redder and dry quicker!

I'm now mixing Vaseline with epaderm and savalon and applying that a couple of times a day, my arms have actually started calm down now along with my legs and thankfully the psoriasis isn't thick.......

So watch this space!

Your husband could have a point there about the extra heat, and maybe the stretching of your skin doesn't help.

Well just when I think I've got things sorted in my head with my skin I get a phone, the hospital want to see me and soon, I have an appointment for tomorrow!

So now thinking go for UVB once baby born and ask to keep it at a lower does to avoid to much redness (as I'm not sure that's best for my skin)

And see where that leads.......
