I have osteoarthritis in my knees, they ache and sometimes hurt. But it usually is one where the knees are achy and stay that way for awhile, then may hurt but the hurt usually builds up and then fades after a bit.

A few years ago, my rheumatologist told me I had psoriatic arthritis. I had stiffness in my ankles, usually when inactive. I would stretch the ankle a little bit and it would start to feel better. Although uncomfortable, I wouldn't say it was super painful. I also wondered if I did in fact have psoriatic arthritis.

About a week ago, I was walking in the house and out of nowhere a pain shot through my ankle. It continued for about 10 steps and I thought great I sprained my ankle somehow. And then, it stopped. Since then, I can be walking and for no reason a searing pain will go through my ankle as I'm walking. Usually somewhere between 2-20 steps later it goes away. This is happening daily. I went shopping yesterday and did a lot of walking. It happened quite a few times but most of the time I was fine. So, I'm confused. I doubt it is a strain or injury as it wouldn't just go away if it were that. So that makes me think of arthritis, but it doesn't gradually come on or ache... it hurts like heck when it happens. Thought I'd see if it was a familiar thing to any of you. Going to the liver specialist today and asking for a referral to get it checked out. I think I want to try a new doctor for this one.

Psoriatic arthritis can come and go, but it could be something else with your ankle. It took me a while but they eventually found out I had fluid on the ankle, it was soon fixed with an injection a bit like they do knees.

So could be worth asking for a scan, x-ray or echo sound to see if something else is going on.

To me it sounds more like a muscle that is shooting in kind of stress or Cramp, because of the sudden painful feeling.
PsA in my opinion and experience is more a slower thing, like an tendon problem at the end of the day after intensive use or pain in your feet that doesn’t go away.
Or stiffness, e.g. in your fingers if you make a fist, that kind of things.

Thanks.

I thought it would be similar to the arthritis I have in my knees (and fingers) and it doesn't feel like that at all! Also, doesn't feel like a muscle cramp of any kind.

The liver doctor suggested a doctor for me to go get checked out. Earliest appointment is Oct 23rd so we'll see what they say. It may be awful by then or may be gone, who knows!? s57

The 23rd is not so far away but lets hope for the “be gone” solution.
My doctor, when I am occasionally there, always says… wait for 10 days and then come back. (I hardly ever have to come back)

Maybe it could be a nerve pain?  Since it's sudden and severe?  I hope that it is not so painful that your ankle can't bear it, causing a stumble or fall.

I don't think it's nerve pain, but it could be nerve or muscle related as I don't really have a clue what's causing it.

As for falling, admittedly I'm not as steady on my feet as I used to be, but it would more be the reaction to the pain that could cause a stumble (hasn't yet so hopefully that won't happen)

My ankles are stiff, especially in the mornings and if I've sat too long. But this is different. My wrist did something similar a while back and now only rarely bothers me so may be just a minor thing that heals on it's own (but hurts bad when it does happen) I didn't walk on my wrist though so wasn't applying weight to the pain.

They say age is just a number, but I wish someone would explain that to my joints!

I'm fine so far today. But then I've only been up a couple of hours. Smile

Yes I would describe my psa as featuring shooting pain.
I’ve had a long-standing Achilles tendon problem and I’ve recently developed a similar pain in my right hip and left knee. The knee hurts when I climb stairs.

The pains usually are worst when I’ve been sitting or lying down and go after hobbling about a while.
They feel sharp or burning and feel like tendons are something are too tight. I often have a feeling like I’ve already snapped something in my ankle but have to carry on walking on it. Luckily it does go after walking a minute or so but can come back on a long walk.

The shooting type pains come when I’m resting and something is particularly aggravated and inflamed. Last night I keep getting a random shooting pain in the sole of my foot. It can be hard to disguise when you’re just sitting there talking to someone and suddenly it’s like someone has stuck a knife in! It comes in waves and can often be helped by wriggling my foot.

Interesting. I didn't have a bad day, actually I thought ok, it's all better until after dinner and then it just reminded me nope, still going to be a pain. Confused

I thought perhaps it was only after sitting for awhile, but started paying attention to when it would happen and realized it was random. I could be walking for a bit and have it start hurting out of nowhere. Although some of the worse of it has been after sitting for awhile, it's not every time.
