Some of us have had psoriasis since childhood, some got it/ realised they had it later on in life.

But can you remember if you knew what it was and were more than vaguely aware of psoriasis before you had it?

Nope I had never heard of it. When I finally did get a diagnoses I was given a little leaflet from my GP that didn't really explain a lot, but we had no internet then.

Today it's the opposite as there too much information and a lot of scammers out there after your money. Unfortunately it's become a money maker and some of the information you can find is questionable to say the least.

I can't vote TL as there isn't an option to say I knew nothing. Wink

Looks like I can’t.. but I was hoping the middle option would cover those who hadn’t heard of it as well as those who may have vaguely..

The first time I had heard the word was at my barbers when I thought I had bad dandruff  I was 17 then and he said get to see your doctor I think it's psoriasis . Scared the pants off me so I rushed to the doctor who looked and prescribed me some coal tar ointment with no explanation of it's something to live with. Like Dave it was way before internet so I thought I was the only person with it as non of my family had heard of it either.
Thank goodness it's easier to find out about health problems these days as long as you look at genuine sites that aren't promoting a product
Nice poll I'll be interested to see how the voting goes

I wasn’t told it was a long term condition either, they don’t bother do they? It came as a bit of a shock later on when it sank in that I wasn’t just going to have it a little while and get over it.

Exactly I thought put the ointment on till it's gone then go back to head and shoulders shampoo. ..... But then it spread  Confused . I don't think I ever came to terms with it until I joined the forum and found I wasn't alone with psoriasis and many more faced the same struggles as me

I knew what it was as my mother was covered in plaques.  Although I thought it was a permanent skin issue, didn't know it was related to the immune system at the time.

I had heard of it but I thought psoriasis was a skin rash that would go away on it's on.

I was first diagnosed with dermatitus so thought I'd use the cream the doctor prescribed and it would clear. When that didn't work and I found out it was psoriasis they gave me all sorts of pamplets and information and talked about different treatments, etc. It was almost overload! That's how I found myself here. Big Grin
