Have been taking the Acitretin now for 9 days and at the moment side effects seem to be minimal.
I do have a little peeling of the skin around the end of some of my fingers, but it is not excessive.
I have also got a bit of a dry cough at the moment and when I cough I feel some pressure at the base of my skull, which van make me feel quite light headed at times, whether this is relevant to the Acitretin, I'm not sure.
At the moment it has not had a bearing on the Plaque Psoriasis.
Some visible results are expected after about 2 weeks on the tablets.

I am currently on 30mg daily, go back for blood tests in another 2 weeks, followed by my next Derm appointment in 3 weeks.

This drug gives me nightmares. The dry cough is a side effect and will only get worse. Two weeks for results? It took me four months to see results. The first three were nasty flare up. At the 6 month my legs were completely clear. My cholesterol was to high to continue this drug.

Well, I'm just coming up on 4 weeks on the Acitretin, and the plaque is showing sign's of receding.
I have my appointment at the hospital in 2 days after doing my bloodtest last week, and I have the feeling that my consultant is going to, at least, double the dose.
Well, will let you know what happens at the hospital, until then, best regards to all.

That's good news that its receding so quickly. A lot of people initially flare. Make sure to stay away from too much extra vitamin A and D; it may cause false overdose symptoms. How does it help the itching? For me, it was the best drug for itching. Mine went away, even in the spot it did not clear.

After a little research I have found that the alcohol limits placed on the post for Acitretin, are imposed by the government.
Having spoken to numerous Dermatlogist's, including a Consultant, there is no adverse effect to you if you drink alcohol, the only downside is that, Acitretin is based heavily on vitamin A, alcohol in turn, surpresses vitamin A from getting into your system.
The conclusion is: if you drink excessive alcohol while taking Acitretin, the benefits
will be minimal, until sustained alcohol free periods are observed.

Hi Micky,
I have been on 100mg a week now for some time now and whilst it has not cleared the p up completely it is at a level I am ok with. My cholesterol has stayed at 5.1 ish which I think is ok. It does make me really sun sensitive though.

Hi, I first used Neotigason in 1984, taking 20mg daily for 5 years. I came off it when I planned to have a family. My third child was born in 1998 and I returned to the medication and have been taking 20mg daily for 15 years. Although I am not completely clear of psoriasis, it has changed my life. Although psoriasis is SEEN as blotches on the outside, it is how it FEELS from the inside which gets me down. The constant catching of it on clothes, the constant sticking of the blood and painful weeping plasma on clothes as well as the constant flaking everywhere got me down. All that has nearly disappeared with Neotigason. There are side effects but they are so much more manageable than full-blown psoriasis and plus, they are predictably relieved during the summer and autumn months. It may have kept psoriatic arthritis at bay, but I'm no medical expert there. I am expertly monitored via regular liver function tests and hospital visits - so a happy bunny. BUT I know that I cannot remain on this tablet forever. So, I'm hoping that this forum will help me with modern alternatives in the same way that I can perhaps help other with my experiences.

Hello mickyfinn.Bette.Johns and mataribot.
It was interesting reading your posts concerning Acitretin.
Especially as i have only today been told im due to start this treatment.
Dont know what dose...low .was mentioned...will find out friday.
Excited to be trying a new treatment.
Not looking forward to side effects.
But....as mentioned..not as bad a the P.
Will keep an eye on your progress micky..
And i will keep my own condition update here too.
