Question about Cosentyx

hi im martin, had psoriasis 27 years, chronic over 90% covered head to toe. also psoriatic arthritis 20 years, neck back knees etc.after 17 years of no treatment whatsoever, i decided to go dermatology, after one of my customers, psoriasis sufferer also who is now completely  free of psoriasis. told me she was on cosentyx i had an appointment 1 week ago,, iv tried all the treatments in the past, and nothing works, puva baths light treatment etc etc, greased up to the eye balls daily. any how my appointment i told the doctor i want to be put on cosentyx at that point doctor said its only for severe sufferers and not everyone gets to go on it, at that point i stripped off n said severe enough??? errrr yeah its pretty severe doctor said, BUT, we have to try other treatments b4 i put you on biological treatments , soshe gave me a prescriptionas long as your arm with creams and lotions,, ones iv tried b4 i mite add. and not worked. sorry about long message. but how long will it take for me to be put on cosentyx????  any replys welcome

In that case you should push them. Have a look at this thread. NICE Quality Standards for Psoriasis

If you have failed on Creams, Light and Oral treatments then they should be looking at Bio. Having said that they still may not put you on Cosentyx before trying something like Stelara first.

doctor did say she would put me on bios. but like you said prob other stuff first,. to be honest. i would sooner have rid of arthritis then the psoriasis. altho the psoriasis is a pain

Yes the priority for me is the psoriatic arthritis as it can ruin your life.

I would always advise anyone to see a dermatologist early and to stick with it. It will take time but the sooner you get seen by one and follow the protocol the sooner later on one will get moved onto something that works.

Cosentyx has been the best thing ever for me, but it's still early days and I have failed on the others before. So I would say if they are offering another Bio, you should try that first. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Another option would be to ask about Fumaderm but it's not widely available in the UK. And personally I would say go the Bio way if they are offering it.

Get your head down and listen to the dermatologist but arm yourself with information from this thread: Biological Treatments For Psoriasis and remember it's your body and sometimes you will have to push.

I agree with Fred ....welcome to the club by the way Martin . But tell them you've failed on these treatments and demand something better...I thinks its highly unlikely you will get Cosentyx as a first biological....in fact I think they will try you on systemic oral treatment first, have you had Methotrexate ...that's the usual starting place, or acetretin that works well ...or the treatment I am on Fumaderm have a read through these Oral Treatments For Psoriasis they are all treatments that you might not have been on before ...but if you have there's all these biological ones Biological Treatments For Psoriasis

Have a look and see what you haven't been on .....ask questions here but remember they are unlikely to start you on Cosentyx......I hope I'm wrong but phone them and tell them the creams are useless for severe psoriasis and you have read the standards that fred gave a link for ... tell them it's not good enough and you demand better

Hi Martin,

Welcome to Psoriasisclub.

I bet you have never been on Fumaderm. just a gamble.

Anyway, list all your treatments and go back to the dermatologist. Avoid methotrexate, it may work, but also may harm you.
If you don't get Cosentyx, then either Stelara (not so strong with the arthritis) or Fumaderm are possible replacements.
