Nails (or what's left of them)

Could anyone advise me of what I can expect with my nails?  I'm in sad shape.  I have three toenails left and only one baby fingernail not affected.  

I've lost most completely and in their place are thick plaques.  In time (when this ever does go into remission) will those plaques simple fall off or will the nails grow out and push them off gradually?  The words ugly just don't seem to describe them enough.  

Any tips on getting them smoother.  I find the feel of even emery boards really awful.  I do keep them well treated with the Dovobet and moisturizers but I was wondering there were any other suggestions some of you may have.

My toenails used to be a hell of a mess always coming away from their beds, but now I'm pleased to say they are ok again apart from a few lines. Also my finger nails have grown back to almost normal, though they do remain very brittle. I do keep them short, so I'm not sure what you could do if you want long ones.

But yes once you start getting the psoriasis sorted they should come back as they are always renewing.

Thanks Fred.  Just to confirm though did the plaques just eventually come off or did the new nail push them off?  

My vanity is pretty much gone so I don't care if they ever get long.  Truth is I'm a gardener so I always kept them cut short because I couldn't seem to pass by a weed without going in deep to pull it out.  snicker

I think probably the only way to clear them will be with a systemic treatment, as creams and light are unlikely to have any lasting effect on nails......at least that was my experience

The flakiness started coming off as the nails started growing again, It was a while ago now but I think the flakes started going on their own first. used to soak my feet often warm water and sea salt for about an hour to help things along. (I just used a basic sea salt from the supermarket that you use for food)

But like Jim said it wasn't till I went on the Bio's that my nails started to get sorted.

Yeah, problem is that until they can figure why my liver numbers are out of whack I can't take any oral drugs.  I understand there is not much they can do with nails with creams, light etc my question was more in the way of coping or the evolution of the nails as the condition goes into remission.  

Again, do the plaques fall off or are they pushed off by the incoming nail?

O/K, that sounds like something I can live with.  I had this horrible picture in my mind of this huge thing falling off and a gapping hole at the end of each toe.  I have a vivid imagination... snort.

Sorry I misunderstood I never lost any nails to psoriasis mine are all striated and my thumb nails are split, so I keep them very short so the split nails don't cause me problems

Mine just lifted from the bed and sort of died, the new growth pushed them along and I just kept cutting them short with clippers after softening them.
