Psoriasis and obstructive sleep apnea

Background:
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder that is associated with the metabolic syndrome and its components. An association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and the metabolic syndrome was previously observed.

Objectives:
To investigate the association between psoriasis and OSA in a comprehensive community-based database.

Materials and methods:
The study was performed utilizing the medical database of Clalit Health Services. Patients with psoriasis were compared to controls regarding the prevalence of OSA in a case–control study. A logistic multivariate model was used to control for independent covariates.

Results:
The study included 12,336 patients with psoriasis ≥21 years and 24,008 age- and sex-matched controls. The prevalence of OSA in patients with psoriasis was increased compared to the control group (2.7%, 1.5%, respectively, P < 0.001). Multivariate analysis adjusting for age, sex, ethnicity, body mass index, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypothyroidism, hyperlipidemia, and peptic disease demonstrated a significant association between psoriasis and OSA (odds ratio = 1.27, 95% confidence interval 1.08–1.49, P < 0.001).

Conclusion:
We found an association between psoriasis and OSA among a large cohort of patients with psoriasis. Clinicians should take into account that patients with psoriasis may have undiagnosed OSA.

Yes I have think I have it a bit. I sometimes wake up gasping for breath, and Mrs Fred has sometimes said she thinks I have stopped breathing.

Yes I am told I have it....I'm regularly woken up by Mrs Jim for gasping in my sleep ....I've never been diagnosed with sleep apnea, and have never considered a link to psoriasis

I was tested and don't have it Clinically, but I can snore like a jackhammer under the right conditions.

I think that I have symptoms of it as I wake up sometimes gasping, this is very interesting as I always thought that it was Mrs Dave trying to smother me to stop my snoring .

If you think you have sleep apnea, I'd suggest getting tested as since I've been put on a CPAP machine, I do sleep better at night. Although I don't like wearing the mask, I've become used to it and after getting over feeling like Darth Vadar at first (no, it's not that bad but you can at times hear yourself breathing) it really has helped. I have fallen asleep without putting on the mask (mine is very small and uses nasal pillows so does not cover my nose or mouth) I always wake up after an hour or two, with the mask on I sometimes get a full 8 hours of sleep although I'll admit that I still often do not sleep the entire night without waking at least once.

Good advice Kat. But I've had enough tests this past couple of years and I'm trying to take a break from hospitals.

I've felt I've had it for many years now, but I sleep well and even if I do wake up wanting a good gasp of air I usualy just roll over and go back to sleep.

If I stop breathing permanently in my sleep and wake up dead, I will say "I should have listened to Kat"
