Hi everyone,  my name is John Im 68 and Ive just had a bad flare of (P) which has taken me by surprise.  I have in the past maybe once a year had the odd elbow flare but did not know this was (P) so just ignored it and it usually just went away a week or so later. However I have had a very bad problem (which Ive had for a long time)  like two years or so on the sole of my left foot and I kept scratching it so needless to say it just got worse and worse developing into a large red shiny patch until eventually I went to the Doctor last week. I showed him the foot and also the elbows.  He gave me antibiotic cream for the foot which is to be followed by Betnovate Cream for two weeks.  The latter is to be used on the foot and the Elbows.  

It has in the last few days spread to both hands and has made my palms very uncomfortable and itchy with the red patches and lots of small raised blister like bumps, certainly not the best thing to happen to a Guitar player.  It would appear from a number of comments ive read that the intense scratching of the sole of my foot  may well have caused this problem.  I do have a glass of wine each day with my dinner which ive done for years without any problem so I repeat its more likely to be the result of Scratching the foot. It has also affected the scalp at the back of my head.  So its obviously distressing to me as Ive only ever had the odd Elbow irritation.  It looks like I may be making some progress with clearing up the sole of the foot following the antibiotic cream use and im not scratching it now.

I would appreciate if anyone can offer me some ideas that would help with my palms as the other areas I can put up with.  As this outbreak is new to me, is there any chance that this will be a short episode and  dissapear again?  or am I going to be stuck with these difficult palms from here on in. its only 6 days yet but so far the Betnovate hasnt helped.  Has anyone found a product that clears it up for them?

Hi john and be as long winded as you like, it's good to hear the full story firstly let me   to the club, we are a small but growing number of psoriasis sufferers from around the world sharing our experiences and learning from one another, there are no advertisements and no spam here all you will find is genuine people with a willingness to share experiences
I'm sure someone will come on with some advice for you, I will give it some thought, and post some links that might help  in a short while

Hi again John just a thought has your psoriasis got worse since starting on Betnovate if so it may not be the right cream for you

As far as ideas, coconut oil is a good safe product to try. I find it helps with dryness and itchiness but you made need a different cream from your doctor.

I don't think, at least from my experience, that having psoriasis in one place or another is an indication on where it might flare again. I had it in numerous spots but now only have problems with ears and scalp.

Hello John   to Psoriasis Club.

First things first: Don't worry about enjoying the Wine. Some say alcohol is bad for psoriasis but so is everything if you follow all the recommendations. I drink regularly and have in the past given it up for a couple of months and it made no difference whatsoever (in fact probably made it worse as I felt miserable without a glass in my hand) also whilst in the dermatology ward for a a week a few years ago getting over a reaction to Humira I was given a glass of red wine with my meal.  

It can come and go, but the best thing is to get referred to a dermatologist as they are better suited to find what is best for you. We are all different and psoriasis is a stubborn bugger to sort out, so what works for one may not work for another. Hence the reason for a dermatologist. A GP can only prescribe you with creams and that is where they usually start, it can work and some never have anything more than the odd tube of cream so it's a matter of trial and error. But Yes it can get worse, and there are different types of psoriasis.

As to what to try for your hands so you can continue using the guitar. I would try the following in this order.

#1 As Kat said Coconut Oil could help.

#2 Not sure if you can get it prescribed in the UK but Dexeryl is good for the hands

#3 Or you could ask your GP for Dovonex Dovobet And Dovonex (What's the difference ?)

Many thanks to all so far who have replied its very encouraging.  I have continued to use the betnovate and my hands are clearing up and the pustules are dissapearing at the moment which is a big relief for me.  I do notice that the sole of my foot does tend to get a hot sensation after applying the Betnovate but doesnt last too long.  Having said that the skin is soft and thin caused by my previous scratching.  Im also continuing to apply to the elbows which are making some slow progress.  I will take note of the Coconut Oil as people seem to be raving about it for all sorts of reasons. Hey what about the good old calamine lotion!

Some have said that Apple Cider Vinegar can be good too.  Has anyone ever heard of Steven Johnson Syndrome (SDS)  I stumbled on it accidentally looking through Wikipedia, what a horrendous thing to have.

That's a good result that you seem to be having and a slow improvement which is good, but if the psoriasis doesn't clear soon don't use too much of the steroid cream as it will seriously thin your skin and make it liable to easily being torn ( I know because the skin on my legs although much improved used to split at the slightest knock....)

Coconut oil is a great moisturiser as long as you get a good quality one , whereas " good old calamine lotion " will tend to dry your skin

I had a look at that SJS Syndrome that looks nasty, and thank goodness not related to psoriasis .

As far as I know hives are not related to psoriasis hives are I believe caused by an allergy,or allergic reaction and generally treated with antihistamine whereas psoriasis is an autoimmune condition .....but I'm no expert I'm just another sufferer who has found something that works for me
