Hello everyone,
I am new here. My seven years old has been diagnosed with psoriasis. The onset was 2 years ago at least, so he was around 5. At first dr thought it was eczema, only in the last year or so that it become scaly. We did not know much about psoriasis when we got the diagnosis, and thought it was just mild skin condition. Only recently a friend of mine mentioned about how surprised she was to know that my son get psoriasis when he is this young and that her husband has psoriasis and it progressed to psoriasis arthritis. Because of that, I decided to  learn more about psoriasis and frankly now we are scared and worried that my son will get psoriasis arthritis and or uveitis. And the facts that there is no cure. Can anybody share with me what the prognosis is like for children who start to have psoriasis this early? Did any of you had the onset during your childhood? Does yours progress to arthritis? If yes, when did it hapen? Do children with psoriasis have higher chance to get psoriasis arthritis as compared to adult with psoriasis? Please share your stroy if you dont mind, especially those of you who had the onset during your childhood or have children with psoriasis.

Thank you so much

Hi vvvvv  Welcome  to the club, I hope you will get some advice to ease your mind regarding this disease, it is unpleasant and he is very young to have it
I myself got it when I was 17 and have struggled to control it until recently, its not a given that your son will develop psoriatic arthritis ... I'm now 68 and have never had joint problems, so it's not definite he will progress to that...the recent advances have made the disease easier to manage, a good dermatologist will sort him out

I'm not sure what they will do with him being so young, but the good news is there are a lot of treatments to control it
There is a lot of information in here and I'm sure you will soon start to get some advice

Hey!

Firstly I want you to know I understand just how worried you are but I want to reassure you that having Psoriasis is not necessarily a terrifying prospect for your son. I was diagnosed at the age of 4 and am now 38. I was diagnosed with PA a few years ago but this is a condition which affects a very very small sub population of people (both with and without skin psoriasis), the uveitis is even rarer. I know there is a lot of info out there on what "could happen" along the line for someone with P but honestly the worst case scenarios are the ones you are concentrating on and are probably the least likely to happen. Smile

The most important thing for the moment is to speak to specialists, get the best course of treatments for your son and educate him about what is happening to his body (in words he understands). That will set him up for dealing with negativity (sadly he will experience that) as he grows up.

I know a lot of people with P, diagnosed at different ages with different severities of the condition and there is no trend that I can see between age of onset and severity. I also think it's worth adding that the genetics that cause P and PsA are thought (at present) to be different so having one does not mean you will get the other.

Glad to be a sounding post if you have any questions.

Krissie

Hello Vvvv5 Wave

My daughter, thankfully, has had only eczema when she was a baby.

Now she is grown up, she has, thankfully, never had P or any skin problems since.

I've had P for 25 years now but, as far i am aware, i don't have PA (long story)

As for a young child having PA, i cannot answer that, only from what i know.

Sorry, i know it's not much help but don't worry, someone is bound to have some answers for you Vvvv5

Hello Vvvv5  Welcome to Psoriasis Club.

I know someone who told me she was apparently born with it, I'm not sure how true it is but like Krissie said she has had it since the age of 4. Unfortunately with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis the is no one suit fits all. It can strike anyone at any time in their life, and as for if he will end up with psoriatic arthritis statistics show around 20% will get it. But that 20% may not get it till very late in life, so I would say don't be scared about it.

Get a good dermatologist to work with you and your son and he will be fine. Don't' get hung up about him getting psoriatic arthritis, just spend your time helping and supporting him through his journey with psoriasis.

Regards.

Fred.

I have had psoriasis (inverse) since I was a kid, but took a long time to get diagnosed. My first symptoms of arthritis was my transmission from middle school to high school. Not everyone gets it, but those with nail and scalp psoriasis have a higher rate.

Well that is correct. I had a bit of scalp psoriasis, that was all, but I stepped right to the PsA.
But indeed as Matari and the others say, only a limited part of the people with Psoriasis get PsA. Better not worry too much in advance as it might never come. And if ... then there will be more than one medications.

And for last, Welcome to Psoriasis Club.
You are welcome here any time and we will try to answer your questions and think together with you if we don't know.

Thank you so much

Hello I was diagnosed very young at around 4 years ago after getting strep throat, but psoriasis runs in my family. I did develop the arthritis in my early 20's, but I had very severe psoriasis at the time and other automommune conditions which probably contributed to it.

Their is such a range of treatment for psoriasis these days, is his quite severe? I don't remember it affecting my childhood too much, but I'm happy to answer any questions if requires.

Another thing you could  try is diet if he's not to bad, modifying his diet may help see The anti-inflamatory food pyramid
This will show you the good foods and the ones to avoid

I have nothing much to add as I was diagnosed later in life and do not have psoriatic arthritis. I agree that you should try not to worry about psoriatic arthritis at this point and I just wanted to say Welcome!!!
