Dovonex and Dovobet

I have faithfully applied Doveobet in cream and in fluid on psoriasis for the past four or five years or so, I never had psoarisis before and developed this at about 55 yrs of age, I related this to stress working in Wirral Borough Council call center which was worse than torture. I suffered the ordeal for 9 years. I have left now. However, to get to the point, the more Dovobet I have been prescribed the worse the psoriasis, which covers my lover and upper limbs, backside and my arms. The psoriasis has never been on my chest or back, but only on my arms. Up to last week, skin was so red and sore and peeling off, I found an old bottle of cod liver oil in the cupboard, I though what to loose, I applied this smelly old stuff on arms and legs one time, just so I could get some sleep. I was burning up. Also my friend has psoriasis and is given Donovex as part of his treatment. I said let me have some, can't be any worse that this suffering.  I have applied the Dovonex twice a day for about 8 days, The red burning and scales and rough skin dust has ceased, the area on which I apply, is still pinkish, but the skin is suddenly very smooth, it still itch, but I notice almost white patches of normal slkin where last week was red and bloody and scales, Reading about Dovobet and my experience is that this has been the greater cause of the psoriasis, this application has actually increased the severity of symptoms of psoriiasis, Reading about Dovobex, which I have borrowed, this is a vitamin D substitute, but Is cod liver oli also vitamin D.  All I can say is that The Dovonex is working very much better in recent days that Dovobet has in the five years I have been using.  Is anyone who might read this post experienced clearup using the Dovonex  ?  Is the cod liver oil, I used in despair have anything to do with clearing this ? I doubt it has anything to do with leaving the council, I am still traumatised having had to endure this suffering in a call center. I really really hated it, but I suppose having no alternative you have to do something.  I thought some days I was going to die, having to listen to the rubbish these people in Wirral talk about. I suppose not being a native to North West is no help, I native to South London where we have better things to do than call the council about a bit of litter in Liscard. I don't know what  I suffered the worse the torture of psoriasis or the torture of working for Wirral Borough Council.

Hi and welcome to the forum and thank you for that interesting story of your journey with psoriasis so far, and your thoughts on the trigger for it
You will find lots of information here about the possible triggers and causes of psoriasis, but I don't think anyone can be certain what the  cause is or yet what triggers it
But I suspect the job you describe in the call centre if you really hated it and it caused you stress it could be the reason yours was triggered. Who knows for certain
Leaving the job It could also contribute to the clearing along with the Dovonex

I got no clearance myself with dovonex when I was on the potions and lotions. It was the various steroid creams that worked for me.... But they should be used as a short term measure not for continuous application

I dont  know if cod liver oil helped but I bet it was smelly I hope someone else can tell you if it's got vitamin D in

My best advice to you would be get to a dermatologist and get something other than ointment to control the psoriasis ... There are so many effective treatments available that a dermatologist can offer, but your GP will only be able to prescribe ointments

Don't worry about spelling and grammar, it's getting the story across that matters
My spelling is useless and autocorrect puts wrong words in very often    but it really doesn't matter
I'm sure dovonex it probably is responsible for the improvement  ...long may it continue  

Edit cod liver oil contains vitamin A and D so might be helping

Ok first thing is you are wrong to have been using Dovobet for 4-5 years, Dovobet is not intended as a long term treatment and it has probably made psoriasis worse. The recommendation as stated by Dovobet is "A treatment period is 4 weeks If it is necessary to continue or restart treatment after this period, treatment should be continued after medical review and under regular medical supervision".

People and even GPs often make the big mistake between Dovobet and Dovonex, there is a big difference and the recommendations especially for Dovobet should be respected, Dovobet is a steroid base and will thin the skin and can also make psoriasis worse. It's always a good idea to slowly wean yourself off of Dovobet and not just stop as it can cause a flare up.

As for Cod Liver Oil, yes it contains vitamin D but Dovonex is a Vitamin D synthetic derivative (Calcipotriol) so comparing the two is difficult. I've never heard of anyone using cod liver oil on their skin but I suppose it's possible it could help, but probably more as a moisturiser (a very smelly one). Some say cod liver oil capsules can help, but that would be down more to the Omega than the Vit D in my opinion. I tried the capsules once but switched to Salmon Oil as it didn't burp back so bad, having said that it never made any difference to psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis.

I'm with Jim, your best bet is to get a referral to a dermatologist. They are better suited to treat you, your GP will and can only prescribe you creams but it's time to move on in my opinion especially now you have reduced the stress levels.

Welcome to the site aughawillen , Fred has got it down to a T .
Most GPs don't know enough about P so the only way to go is to insist that you see a dermatologist as I assume that you are not seeing one at the moment, if you are seeing a derm then change as they obviously don't know what they are doing !
Have a good look round on the site as Fred has accumulated vast amounts of knowledge on all types of treatments and with the experience that the inmates have of living with P and PsA there are not many questions that cannot be covered.
Take care and just ask away , don't worry about spellings we don't care about things like that .

I will take your advice and get a review, the trouble with our doctors you never see the same one again and in this surgery you have to make a telephone appointment first, I am a little surprised, we just keep putting repeat prescriptions into the doctors and getting bottles and bottles of Dovobet, the red one. either in cream form or liquid..  I have never yet had a tube of the Dovonex. 

I thought something wonderful was happening.  I have now read the articles on the Donovex and Dovobet, and its any wonder I was in such pain.  As you know sunshine is supposed to be good, the few days we had this year I liberally applied the Dovobet and sat in the sun thinking this might do some good.  It has taken about 10 weeks just to calm down to a state as previously described.  

I will watch out for posts and info on this site, Thanks for you advice. Dovobet and medical review.  I thought I would post that cod liver oil, I was desparate, and a bottle of this has been in the cupboard for years, However, This I think this has done something good, but probably the Dovonex is the reason for the calming.

Our doctors must be a bunch of clowns, I was last seen about 18 months ago, and was given a course of antibiotics it was that sore, but they did not stop prescribing the Dovobet. The trouble with these doctors every time you get an appointment its with a different Dr, all they have is the history to view.

Time to tell your doctor to have a read of these threads:

I would also dump your doctor as you shouldn't be getting antibiotics to treat psoriasis and he/she obviously doesn't have a clue about what is going on with you, I would also insist on a referral to a dermatologist as soon as possible.

It's possible the antibiotics are in case there's an infection in the broken skin . But agree antibiotics do nothing for psoriasis
