My first time on the forum . I hope this is the correct place for questions .
If it's not - sorry , but here goes anyway .

Is there any such thing as a "trigger "that can cause the onset of psoriasis ?

Almnost exactly a year ag i was working decorating the bathroom at my home .
I was wearing latex surgical gloves as I was applying neat household bleach to
clean the grout in the tiles . As I was using the bleach I felt it trickling along my
right arm from my wrist to my elbow . It was stinging quite a bit at the point where the latex
glove meets the inner side of my wrist . Because I was almost finished I stupidly carried on for a few
more minutes .

When I removed the glove I could see that my inner wrist was weeping blood .

I washed under cold running water and thought no more of it .

Over the next few days my wrist became quite soe and it was clear to me that the bleach
had burnt me quite badly . Again , stupidly , I did not seek medical attention and just left
it to it's own devices to heal naturally .

Over the following months the burn has settled down with regard to pain but has left a vivid
deep red scar measuring roughly one inch by one half inch . The skin has still not healed properly
and forms small white plaques that continually produce dead white skin with much the sameearance as psoriasis plaques .

Over the following months i began to develop patches of what my doctor told me is psoriasis .

A two inch circle around the entire area of my right elbow .

Several half inch laques on both legs .

One on my stomach .

A few on my lower back .

So here's the question ?

Due to the appearance of the scar on my wrist, and how it appears much the same
as psoriasis , is it possible that the initial burn has triggered the appearance of psoriasis ?

Apart from mild acne as a boy i have never had any skin problems .

It seems strange to me that this has suddenly happened .

Hello John  Welcome to Psoriasis Club.

It's one of those big mystery's to what actually starts it off, and the list is never ending. Even today after well over 30 years if I get even a mild flare up I start wondering what caused it, though not so much these days as I have never been able to work it out.

Here are a couple of threads you may find interesting, and there is a lot of information available.

What triggers psoriasis flare ups ?

What is Koebner reaction ?

Regards.

Fred.

Hi John and  Welcome  to the forum. You will find us a helpful friendly bunch here .....always ready to listen and offer our experiences of what was our triggers and what we have done to try to control it .
Fred has already told you that there is no one trigger that causes outbreaks on people but in my case it was usually bad throat infections ... As soon as one starts I fear a flare of my psoriasis .

Initially I think it was stress that first triggered my psoriasis as I had just started serious " courting" and the stress of a serious relationship must have brought it on.

It's possible in your case that the bleach incident may have caused it, but I think it's fair to say if it had not been that another trigger would probably caused it to erupt

I hope you find the forum interesting and Fred has pointed you at some good threads to read
If you wish you should join us anytime in the off topic section where things are a bit more light hearted Thumb
Good luck and enjoy your time with us
Jim

Hi John welcome to the site , most inmates on here are a bit barmy but we all know what you are going through as we have the same sort of problems .
My P ,I think, was started by a combination of things such as stress, a sore throat like Jim and I have noticed that if I damage the skin then the site can start the P off. At the moment I am really good as I am taking Stelara but it has taken me years to get to this point.
One thing I will say , get your GP to refer you to a dermatologist , GPs are OK but they know a lot about a little and want you want is a specialist who know a lot about your P.

Welcome!

Personally I think it's possible to have triggers that lead to a psoriasis flare. I agree with Jim in that at some point, you probably would have had psoriasis appear.

I also have never been able to determine a trigger for myself. Psoriasis first showed up for me on my ears. I do wear glasses at times, so it's possible the friction from wearing glasses could have set it off..... or not.

I hope you find a good treatment to help you to deal with it, and glad you found your way here. Smile

Hi John,

Welcome on the site. My opinion is close to Kat's, in the sense that it already is in your system and that at some time your would have gotten it anyway.
I think that stress is an important factor, I myself can only relate that to the reason that I have it, together with some genes of my parents.

But in literature lots of causes are suspected, recently I read on a psoriasis site that even the lack of certain bacteria in your intestines may be a cause of it. Don't know if that is true. Lots of reseach claims to have some statistical evidence.

Over here with us you have found a nice group of people, always someone to chat to or someone that will react to your posts. We also enjoy ourselves in the off topic section to have a bit of fun and laughter as what we all have is already serious enough.

Caroline
