Here is a little tutorial on how to use Quotes in your posts, I've noticed some of you are having problems and are not sure how to use them.

So first off you will need to start a new thread in the [Group Specific] board. Just start your thread as normal and title it whatever you want, if you don't know how to start a thread see here: Starting a new thread Put something in your post and post your thread.

Now it would be handy if you can ask another member to help as you need other posts to quote. You can quote your own if you want for the test, but I wouldn't want you to be Billy No Mates. (So if you can't find anyone to help let me know and I will be your buddy) Smile

To use quotes you need to use two simple pieces of code, the first is an opening code and the second is the closing tag. You put your quote between the opening and closing tags. To give you an idea this is not a usable code as they are all different but notice the difference between the open and the close, the close has a /

[open] THIS IS THE QUOTE [/closed] it's as simple as that, I will explain the different codes as we go on.

Move on to the next post where you will find out about the different types of quote.

*Note: Where you see a white box with Code: above it that's because you can't post an open and closed code without it working. So I have put them in the white Code: box to stop them working so you can see how they are used. Feel free to copy and paste them in your test thread if you want.

This is a quote box, you can use this to put text in from another source. For example if you want to quote something you found on Wikipidea you would normally put it between brackets "Like This" that's fine for a small sentence but if it's an article it would look better like this:

Quote:
The cause of psoriasis is not fully understood. There are two main hypotheses about the process that occurs in the development of the disease. The first considers psoriasis as primarily a disorder of excessive growth and reproduction of skin cells. The problem is simply seen as a fault of the epidermis and its keratinocytes. The second hypothesis sees the disease as being an immune-mediated disorder in which the excessive reproduction of skin cells is secondary to factors produced by the immune system. T cells (which normally help protect the body against infection) become active, migrate to the dermis and trigger the release of cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-alpha TNFα, in particular) which cause inflammation and the rapid production of skin cells. It is not known what initiates the activation of the T cells.

Wikipedia.

Now to look how the above was achieved, the quote from Wikipedia is inside the following codes.
Code:
[qt]HERE[/qt]

So in your test thread go and add a quote box and see how it works. Once you've got the hang of it move on to the next post.

Right now you have got that you need to get your buddy to make a post in your thread, or IF you are Billy No Mates after all, you can make one yourself. Just a normal post and post it.

Go to the next post.

Now we are going to quote the post above, or in your case the post from your buddy.

This is done with the following codes. (Notice the opening code contains the users name, the pid which is the post number, and the dat/time.)
Code:
[quote='Fred' pid='10473' dateline='1389267858']
QUOTE HERE
[/quote]

Go to the next post.

So you can see here I'm making a reply to the above post.

What I have to find a username, a pid, and a dateline before I can quote the post above? eek

No you don't need to find anything, all you need to do is click the Quote button bottom right of the post you want to quote. It will put the codes including the post and all you need to do is post under the closing code [/quote]

If you want to quote only part of the post, just remove the part you don't want from between the opening and closing tags.

Like this.
Code:
[quote='Fred' pid='10473' dateline='1389267858']
IF you are Billy No Mates after all
[/quote]

Who are you calling Billy

Off you go to your test thread and have a go, when you got it come back and go to the next post where you will learn Multi-Quote. Scare

Multi-Quotes, are a little bit harder to understand but they are just as easy once you get the hang of it.

Why would you want to use Multi-Quote?

You use them to quote more than one post, so lets say you want to reply to post number 1 and post number 3 at the same time.
*In post number 3 I will remove some text to show a reply to a relevant part.

like this.

Thank you, but I still don't have a clue.

I like Wikipedia.

Remember we said to quote a post we needed the Username, tid, and dateline ?

No! you've forgotten that bit. Go back and start again. Spank

If you look bottom right of a post you will see the "Multi Quote" button click it and the green + will change to a red - do this for each post you want to quote and click "New Reply" it will add all the codes and the content ready for you to post.

It will look like this.
Code:
[quote='Fred' pid='10460' dateline='1389264663']
THE 1st POST IS HERE
[/quote]

Add your comment here.

[quote='Fred' pid='10470' dateline='1389267536']
AND THE 2nd POST IS HERE
[/quote]

Add your comment here.

You can add as many quotes as you want but be careful it can look messy. Once you have practised the Multi-Quote and got the hang of it come back here for more.

Oh you came back, wow you are a glutton for punishment. Big Grin

So you want more do you?

OK go back to your test thread and get your buddy or yourself to post a few questions, then I will show you how to answer each one using a different type of multi quote. This is handy for splitting up a post to give quick simple answers.

Lest say this is your buddy's post.

Hello can anyone tell me where I can get myself a new pencil? I would like one with a rubber on the end if possible.

Also whilst I'm here I have a second hand Pogo Stick for sale if anyone wants to make me an offer, I used it to pick apples but it seems to have lost its Boing.

Now I will answer.

(Thu-09-01-2014, 11:51 AM)Fred Wrote: Hello can anyone tell me where I can get myself a new pencil?

Try a pencil shop.

(Thu-09-01-2014, 11:51 AM)Fred Wrote: I would like one with a rubber on the end if possible.

Would that be an American rubber or an English one. Big Grin

(Thu-09-01-2014, 11:51 AM)Fred Wrote: I have a second hand Pogo Stick for sale

I'll give you €500

(Thu-09-01-2014, 11:51 AM)Fred Wrote: It seems to have lost its Boing.

I know that feeling.

All I done there was to push the "Quote" button as normal, once the window opened for me to make my post I copied the opening code
(Thu-09-01-2014, 11:51 AM)Fred Wrote: I then pasted the opening code before the text I wanted to quote followed by a closed tag. So it looked like this.

Code:
[quote='Fred' pid='10460' dateline='1389264663']
Hello can anyone tell me where I can get myself a new pencil?
[/quote]

[quote='Fred' pid='10460' dateline='1389264663']

[/quote]

[quote='Fred' pid='10460' dateline='1389264663']

[/quote]

[quote='Fred' pid='10460' dateline='1389264663']

[/quote]

I hope that has helped explain how to use Quotes in your post, if you're still getting stuck please let me know what bit you are stuck on and I will help.

Go on then get back to you test thread Billy and have a go. Big Grin

Just remember it's all to do with putting your chosen quote between

An opening code.
Code:
[quote]

And a closing code.
Code:
[/quote]

And it's important that you always scroll down to make sure you are posting below the last closing code.
