Hello Goofyshoes to Psoriasis Club.
I would massage it in well to the effected area only, then wash your hands afterwards as you don't want to use it where your skin is ok. As for washing it off, I would just put the next layer on in the same way straight over the top. Then in the morning have a warm shower with some nice moisturising Gel or Soap and start all over again, try to avoid moisturising soaps with perfumes or Parabens. (You may prefer to have a shower in the evening and not apply anything before going to bed as some ointments can stain your bed clothes, and it may effect your sleep as you could feel greasy).
Like Jim said you may get other opinions, but that's how I used to do mine.
