I think fear in moderation can be a good thing. It can lead to being cautious, of course too much fear can lead to being paranoid.
A gambler bets on the odds. Depending on how much he has to lose, or win, depends on which odds he's willing to play. I think the same goes for treatments. If the normal side effects are lesser than the disease, then most will go for it hoping they are not one of the "few" that the side effects are worse than the disease.
And sometimes.... you just have to hope you beat the odds.
