Well I've been on different amounts for quite some time. Not sure I ever asked the doctor the questions I had. If I did.... I have forgotten the answer.
I do know I tried Vit D the natural way, as well as having light therapy and my Vit D runs low unless I supplement it. Right now I'm getting some sun exposure and taking one 125 mcg (5,000 IU) per day and my levels about two months ago (when I was actually getting MORE sun) was just barely over the lower end of the ok range. In the past I was taking the 2,000 IU but my numbers dipped too low.
