I will be getting one too.
Normally I do not go for an influenza vaccine, but this Covid I think is way more dangerous.
Because of the pandemic, I did enhance my knowledge on the working of a vaccine and the different types of vaccines. Even yesterday evening I followed a webinar on it with explanation of experts and with representants of science and pharmacy available.
The thing a vaccine does is nothing more that what the virus also does, but then safer. The vaccine in fact shows the "signature" of the virus to the immune system, the immune system then reacts by making anti-bodies for it, and those antibodies then are able to connect to the virus when it appears in your body. The anti bodies make it possible for the immune system to recognise the virus, attach to it, and signal the killer T-cells to connect and get rid of the virus. Building up this immune respons will cost a few days.
So it prepares the body for the infection, so that it will react immediately after a contamination with the virus.
If without a vaccine, the body will react in the same way. When contaminated, the immunesystem will see the intruder, will create anti-bodies, and will call the T-cells, this will cost a few days, depending on the effectiveness of your immunesystem and the availability of necessary substances to build up the adequate respons.
But... in the mean time the virus that has entered will replicate and it will be a race between the immune system and the effects of the virus. Mostly but not always the immune system wins in the end. Having an strong immune system, vitamins available, and a few other elements available, helps in this response. Some medicines, like HCQ, help in the beginning to prohibit the rapid replication of the virus and this buys time for the immune response, and some biologicals also prohibit the cytokine storm that may appear as a reaction of the body to the virus and again will buy time for the immune system and the T-cells to come up with the adequate respons. Finally it is always the immune system itself that conquers the virus, never it is the medication.
The purpose of the vaccine is to have this immune reaction as fast as possible and kill the virus as it just has entered, thus preventing further spread in and outside of the body.
