Hi Mary yes you should only use the creams sparingly but it seems as if your dermatologist is not helping you very much.
I can understand your reluctance to drugs but as I see it you have two choices
1/ Try to control it with diet the natural way as Alan has done here How I Cured My Psoriasis By Diet
Or
2/Try drugs they may not affect you badly, the one I'm on had side effects to begin but after a while they calm down and hopefully keep you clear
It's not a nice thing to deal with and it's always difficult to try to get clearance or at least comfortable in my early days with it I grabbed as much sun as I could and that used to keep me clear through the summer
