Note: Orencia is only used for psoriatic arthritis.
Orencia: (generic name abatacept) For adult patients with psoriatic arthritis, Orencia may be administered as an intravenous infusion (IV) or a subcutaneous (SC) injection. Orencia can be used with or without non-biologic DMARDs.
Intravenous Dosing Regimen:
Orencia should be administered as a 30-minute intravenous infusion utilizing the weight range-based dosing. Following the initial intravenous administration, an intravenous infusion should be given at 2 and 4 weeks after the first infusion and every 4 weeks thereafter.
Subcutaneous Dosing Regimen:
Orncia 125 mg should be administered by subcutaneous injection once weekly without the need for an intravenous loading dose. Patients switching from Orencia intravenous therapy to subcutaneous administration should administer the first subcutaneous dose instead of the next scheduled intravenous dose.
Treatment will usually be stopped if there is no improvement after 12 weeks.
Patients should be checked for tuberculosis (TB) before taking Orencia and you should have regular blood tests.
Who should not take Orencia?
*People with active serious infections, history of recurrent infections.
*Children - Orencia is not aproved for under 18s with psoriatic arthritis
*You should consult your specialist if you are pregnant, planning a baby, or breast feeding
What should I watch for AFTER starting Orencia?
*Infections.
*Allergic Reactions.
*Fevers sweats chills, muscle aches, coughs, shortness of breath, blood in phlegm.
*Weight loss.
*Warm, red, or painful skin or sores on your body
*Diarrhoea or stomach pain, burning when you urinate or urinate more often than normal
The most common side effects of Orencia include: Headache, Sore throat, Upper respiratory tract infection, Nausea.
