You'll see by my response to you in another thread that I am one of the reluctant ones to use the word cure.
I do believe that what we put in our bodies greatly affects our health and I do believe that one of the treatments for keeping psoriasis in check can be found in diet for some people. However, to me cure means that I can stop treatment with no return of the disease and if I must continue either medicine or diet to stay clear... then I think the answer is that I have found a treatment that works for me however I wouldn't call it a cure as the disease is still there and can flare once again. That's just my way of looking at it. I am glad however that it is working for you! And your information is very valuable for those wishing to try it out.

Hi Kat. Thanks for the encouragement, I am hoping that I will be able to return to a normal diet in 6 months time after my body has had a chance to heal without me continually aggravating things by eating certain foods. So far so good, but I will only find out when I start adding foods back into my diet one by one. I hope that I end up being able to eat whatever I want again (after all, I did up until a year ago) but the main thing for me is that I have now got this thing under control and I am ruling it - not the other way round. If I have to avoid certain foods permanently then so be it. It's a small price to pay for being free of this thing.

I just wanted to chime in to say that I have had pretty good response with this sort of diet as well. My Psoriasis is diminishing slowly but surely - in my case I believe it's more related to yeast/molds/fungus. I've been on a gluten free diet for several years but I was still eating gluten free breads and such. Now that I've decided to cut out all yeasts - which means no bread or cheeses - it's clearing my palmar very nicely! And the plaque on elbows, legs is thinning which is a great sign!

Wow I'm glad it's working for you Celia....I wish I had the will power ...but for those that do its a great testament that it works for you

Really great to hear Celia. Very good to hear that it is working. Indeed my doc always hammers on the importance of food. I myself have changed my diet also. Eating more vegetables, less meat, no potatoes at all. I cannot do without bread yet.

It's hard not to eat bread!! It really is. And my kids still live on bread, pizza, cookies - all the good stuff that i can't have.
They're apologetic, but not about to give any of it up, so I just have to chin up and remind myself how much better I feel, and how much better my skin feels when I stick to my veggies, rice, meat and nuts! What I'm really missing the most is cheese. I have a theory that in my case it's more about the fungus/mold/yeast reaction in my body than anything else. Of course this has all been trial and error for years. But this particular trial seems to be giving good results so far... fingers crossed!

Hi Celia, thank you for your encouragement, and it's good to hear you're having success by altering your diet in a similar way. I too believe it's a fungal problem in the gut causing the underlying problem. I'm hoping that by following this restricted diet I'll end up starving it of what it needs to thrive and that eventually my body will get back into balance.
I think I'm having some success on this front, because I have cheated a couple of times in the last 2 weeks by eating some starchy and sugary food without any adverse effects (a few biscuits and some chocolate). This was by way of a test to see how my gut is recovering and I think I'm making progress. However, it's back to being strict again after a couple of lapses. I do aim to sit down to a full Christmas dinner this year come what may - hopefully without any side effects a day or two afterwards. Watch this space! You mentioned cheese - I've found that small amounts (matchbox sized) of mature cheese (more than 12 months matured) doesn't give me any problems. It's a nice treat once a week or so. I've also started drinking raw unpasteurized kefir from a local farm this last couple of weeks and think that this is helping; my hands and feet are better than they have been in months - skin thickening nicely, fingerprints much more developed now and the itching is practically gone most of the time. Also, this last week I've started to remove my gloves when at work when I've needed extra dexterity (I'm an engineer) - without damaging the healing skin too much. I'm in this for the long haul. Patience is definitely a virtue in beating this thing! I've got a follow-up appointment with the dermatologist on Monday and I'm interested to see the reaction to my progress using diet as my treatment of choice.

Hi Alan glad things are progressing well, I would love to have your willpower and give it a go, but I know I know I couldn't do it, I will follow you with great interest though
What does your dermatologist think of your treatment I have never found them interested in alternative treatments or ideas so will be interested in your experience with them.

Hi Jim. I suspect you're right. I expect the consultant will show little to no interest in what I'm doing to manage my condition naturally. It's outside of their remit - they're only interested in prescribing drugs.
When my GP asked if I needed any more steroid creams and moisturisers a couple of months ago - a week before I returned to work - I said that I'd stopped using them 6 weeks prior. She asked what I was using and I said nothing apart from changing my diet. The lack of interest was shocking. The next step for me on this follow-up was due to be chemotherapy drugs if I hadn't improved, and I had not been improving at all by using the various potent steroids and emollients. I'd already decided that the various systemic drugs used to treat palmar plantar psoriasis with their well documented serious side effects was not the way I was going to go - it seemed like a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Changing diet has made a massive improvement to my psoriasis, and also to my general health as well. I've now lost 3 stone, my resting heart rate is down and so is my blood pressure. For me it's a win win situation without the risk of serious side effects from immunosuppressant drugs. |
