The Irish Examiner reports that Waterford has closed it's doors to all but urgent cases.

Quote:
It has been reported that the Dermatology Department at Waterford Regional Hospital has closed its doors to all but urgent cases.

Several hundred thousand living in the south-east of Ireland currently rely on the services provided by the hospital.

However, according to Newstalk Radio, as of last week one of the specialist departments in that hospital shut its doors to all but urgent cases.

That is the Dermatology Department where people receive treatment for a variety of skin conditions, including psoriasis, eczema, scarring acne and even skin cancer.

The station reported that last week GPs in the region received a letter from one of the hospital's two Dermatology Consultants.

In it, he stated that the department is at crisis point and that a critical incident is waiting to happen.

Given that, they are unable to accept any new patients other than the most urgent cases involving suspected skin cancer.

Update from Irish Examiner

The HSE has said in a statement today: "In consultation with the Dermatology Service in Waterford Regional Hospital, the service remains open to all referrals i.e. urgents and routine.

"This is being communicated to GPs in the region today."

So does that mean it's Not Closing? And/or have I read it wrong?

How do you read the statement:
""In consultation with the Dermatology Service in Waterford Regional Hospital, the service remains open to all referrals i.e. urgents and routine. "

Is it saying:
#1 It's not going to close and that's the end of it.
#2 It's not closing whilst we are in consultation about closing it.
#3 It remains open to urgent and (routine) existing appointments, but not new referrals.

I'm confused Huh

Jim I suggest you take a few Euros out of the Psoriasis Club petty cash, then book a *Ryanair and get some answers our readers can understand. [Image: smiley-transport015.gif]

*I'm sure other airlines to Ireland are available, but it's the only one I could think of whilst packing Jim's sandwiches.

Oh don't be confused Rolleyes
Just back on my Ryanair flight to Dublin
Have re-read the article and from the way I read it they have not said they are closing the department. I think it is quite clear that they will remain open for urgent and non urgent referrals

It looks to me as if the quote I added was added to perhaps an earlier edition, as it is contradicting the main article

Yes it was added after, so you reporting skills are confirming that it's #1 It's not going to close and that's the end of it ?

By the way did you bring back any Guinness Rolleyes

No no NoNo The article never mentioned the department closing, only that it would not be able to accept new referrals

The contradiction comes in the add on where the HSE said they had informed GPs that it remains open for all referrals urgent and routine
I may be misinterpreting it but to me it's quite clear (having just flown backBig Grin) that the hospital has probably been told they can't refuse referrals. Then the newspapers both of them added the second quote.
I don't even live in Ireland why am I getting involved. Doh just drunk all the Guinness sorry hic

Important Announcement!

We interrupt this thread to let you know that unfortunately our roving reporter (Jim) has had to much Guinness (as one does when in Ireland) and has been thrown off the plane whilst over the sea. And as I have obviously read the whole thing wrong, and probably given you all the wrong information. I have no option but to say "If anyone from Ireland or Waterford in particular who knows more would like to post or contact us, please do so.

We apologise for any inconvenience and our strange usual service will be resumed as soon as I know what I'm on about, Jim finally makes it back to base, another member spots this and complains that it's gone way off topic, or you join us and put this post right.

Carry On. Smile

Oh and I don't live in Ireland either, but I do like Guinness and it has some of the most beautiful green land you will ever see. (Fred shut up)

And Jim please report to the cellar on your arrival back in the office to claim your expenses.
