Hi! My name is Dani. I am 18 years old and I have Scalp Psoriasis.

I grew up in Yokosuka City, Kanagawa, Japan but I am currently in the Philippines studying. The first time I noticed flaky patches on my scalp was about 8 months ago when I was still in Japan. I had an auntie who works at a derma clinic and provided me topical creams to cure it so I never had to buy one from the drugstore. It worked and everything was okay, until February this year.

The heat's too strong here in the Philippines so I decided to tie my hair up in a bun. My blockmate noticed flaky patches and asked me what they were and I was so embarassed. ?

I did a little google search and found this forum and it looks like everyone here is nice and friendly so I am trying my luck here. 

I never bothered to take note of what cream I was using back when I was still in Japan. I wonder if you guys can help me what name of topical cream to buy here in the Philippines? I'm a student and I don't have extra money to have myself checked more so purchase the oral medicine they'll prescribe.

Hi Dani and welcome to the club ...I know it can be embarrassing to have scalp psoriasis and most of us struggle to control it and hide it

But you have found us and you are among a friendly group who will advise you the best way forward

I will say there is no cure but there are effective treatments that can control it but there are also a lot of scammers out there who will gladly take your Money with the promise of a cure, there are also dangerous supposedly herbal creams that contain steroids being sold as a "cure"
But the best thing is to see a dermatologist and get a prescribed safe treatment in the meantime try TGel shampoo it's known to help and use a good quality coconut oil to moisturise
And come back here often to see what others suggest

Thank you for your advice jiml. I will definitely check if TGel is available at the drugstores here. I'm here alone and my room mates at the dorm aren't the friendliest so I didn't know who to ask.

Sadly and as Jim has already said, there is no cure for psoriasis, only treatments.

There are many ointments that can help, but you most likely will need a dermatologist to get a prescription. Also, a lot of ointments contain steroids and are not for long term use. The absolutely best advice is to be seen by a doctor.

Virgin coconut oil can help the symptoms of itching and is a great moisturizer. For the scalp, some people get help from shampoos (T-Gel plus others that say they are for psoriasis, eczema and/or dandruff, tar shampoos have been mentioned as helpful, also tea tree oil has been mentioned) But just to be honest, none of those helped me clear up. They can help with some of the symptoms short term though.

And also as Jim has already said but can't be stressed enough....... DEFINITELY beware of scammers that promise a "cure"!!!!

I can't really offer any specific advice on scalp psoriasis but there are plenty of people on here who will certainly be able to......

I would agree though if you can get to see a derm, that would help, however, I appreciate the cost element too when you are a student.....

Sorry but I can't be of more use other than to emphasize what the others have said. I would add that any creams are only ever going to be a stop gap solution. Indeed any containing steroids such as Dovobet should only be used for periods of 4 to 6 weeks as they can cause thinning of the skin.

Feel free to ask any questions, although non of us are medically qualified we all have experience with this disease.

Hello Dani   to Psoriasis Club.

I can only repeat the warnings the others have already told you. There are far to many scams out there, and you really should get a prescription from a dermatologist.

The virgin coconut oil could well be worth a try, you can read more about it here: Coconut Oil

Try putting a good coating on your scalp and wrapping your head in Cling Film. Put a shower cap on top after you have wrapped it that will help keep it in place and the warmth will help. After a few hour (preferably overnight) wash oit out with warm not hot water.

Depending on how thick or long your hair is you may need to work it in a bit harder, but I would suggest trying it for a couple of times a week.

Try not to feel embarrassed about it in front of you "blockmate" explain how you feel and get him/her on your side. But if all else fails you find a warm welcome and lots of support here from people just like you.

Hi dani nice to meet you!
I have had it on my scalp in the past, though currently I don’t - psoriasis has a tendency to move around.
When I had scalp P I found Oilatum shampoo to be soothing.
It may not sound very pleasant but it might also help to reduce the number of times you wash your hair as water itself can be very drying.
Good luck with getting the right treatment - I hope you get to see a doctor or dermatologist for some medication - love to hear how it goes

Kon'nichiwa Dani, welcome to the club.  I'm sorry to hear you are suffering, you have come to the right place though. I don't have any words of wisdom for scalp psoriasis but it looks like Fred and the others have you covered in that respect. Most of all we are here to support each other and you can come on for a chat anytime.
