Pain in the neck

My sons neck has been stiff for months. Our doctor said he guaranteed it was not related to psoriatic arthritis, and the dermatologist said yesterday that psoriatic arthritis is usually in the hands so its unlikely related. Anyone here ever had issues with the neck and arthritis?

Hi Imapsomum,

Principally the dermatologist is right. For Psoriactic Arthritis it is known that it is mostly in the small joints, like fingers and feet. Still I read from people on the forum with Psoriactic Arthritis that they may also have problems with the larger joints like knees and hips.

Still this does not answer your question, the stiffness.
I remember when I got the Psoriactic Arthritis, the first signals were not my joints but my tendons. I used to be a runner in my younger youth, and it all started with several injuries on my Achilles‘ tendons, before it became feelable the joints of feet and fingers.
I don’t know if others have identical experiences, but I once have read somewhere (don’t know where anymore) that injuries to tendons may be a signal for approaching Psoriactic Arthritis.

So if you expand this thought, the stiffness in your sons neck might be related. But, this is a wild guess and totally not supported by any evidence, just a thought and rememberance of my own problems.
If he will be on treatment I suspect that in that case also the effect for his neck may change in the good.

Yes if he does end up on Stelera it will be interesting to see of the neck clears up (my guess is photo therapy will do nothing for arthritis!)

Well.... I am not sure about that.
The phototherapy increases the vitamine D-level in the skin, that is basically what it does as far as I know/guess, I can imagine that part of that will enter his whole body leaking out of the skin (you might ask about that) . Vit. D is also good in suppressing the Psoriactic Arthritis.
So .. perhaps he is lucky.

Neck pain is part of my disease, but whether your son's neck pain is arthritic I couldn't say. At least you are managing his care vigorously. Well done!

I have been diagnosed with psa and see a rheumatologist but so far no lumpy fingers or toes - with me it’s all tendons and ligaments, which they have based the diagnosis on.

I have had carpal tunnel (one op) plantar fasciitis (under the heel), Achilles tendinitis (comes and goes - they get lumpy and tender to touch), pain in the tailbone area and some neck problems which mean I can’t lie on my back for long as it gives me headaches, though I wouldn’t say I have a stiff neck all the time.
I’m not sure whether my neck issues are related, I might just be getting on and putting all my aches and pains down to the psa!

I’ve had an X-ray and an mri which haven’t revealed anything as yet.

So, he may just have a stiff neck but I don’t think your doc is right to say they ‘guarantee’ it’s not related.

It might be they are trying to reduce your worries regarding your son I suppose, but he shouldn’t really have a stiff neck for months at his age and you are looking for answers so I think they may be being unhelpful.

I have ached just about everywhere over the years and for me it's all psoriatic arthritis related. My dermatologist was not so sure when I said my sternum felt like it had psoriatic arthritis, but as soon as I went on Cosentyx it went away.

I have it in my neck according to the MRI scan plus I have it in the hands , feet plus back and other joints but I am old and decrepit anyway and your son is at that age where they are growing and changing a lot so it could well be down to that.

Just noticed these replies. Thank you. Yes the neck pain has been going on too long to be nothing but seems to be a bit better with the last physio appointment. If it continues much longer I will push for an MRI and a Rheumatologist
