Hi. I’m Jo and I’ve just joined this forum. I was diagnosed with psoriasis in January 2018 after 6 months of not really knowing what was happening (to my scalp especially). Got nowhere with GP so paid £180 to see a private consultant dermatologist who made the diagnosis in 30 minutes. Prescribed Sebco, Betamousse, Alphosyl shampoo and Eumovate. However, I haven’t really seen any real  improvement. Returned to GP who, after telling me that I’m “an unfortunate case” prescribed Dobovet which actually started to help but now my hair is falling out and I’ve got bald patches!! It’s  really affecting my confidence. Anyone got any ideas?

Hi Jo and   to the club. You have found a great place here for advice and support for this disease, as you will find us all  friendly group of like minded sufferers that know what you are going through. My advice to you is tell your GP that you are not an unfortunate case, as psoriasis is a very common condition and that you would like to be referred to a NHS  dermatologist, as the private dermatologist offerered you nothing that your GP could have offered and a hospital dermatologist has many more things in their armoury to treat it with .....but it is a bit hit and miss what will and won't work ...
Your problem with the hair falling out is very unfortunate and may be caused by the mix of treatments but I'm not an expert and hair loss is not something I have heard of from using topical shampoos and creams

Hopefully someone else may have better answers for you, but do keep coming and talking about it as sharing a problem often helps reduce the stress Enjoy the forum

Hi Jo,

Very good advice from Jim as usual. The treatment you received seems pretty standard for a first presentation. I think the hope is that the disease will go into remission very quickly. Your disease apparently has not. I hope things get better for you quickly, but in the meantime you should get yourself under the care and management of a dermatologist as this will give you access to the most effective treatments.

Not much I can add to what the others have already said, apart from have a look at this thread NICE Quality Standards for Psoriasis it may help.

As for it effecting your confidence, it will do that and I'm sure all of us here at one time or another have felt the same. It is with you now for life, but it can be managed so the sooner you see an NHS dermatologist the better.

It's easy for me to say don't let it get you down, but learning to accept it and sharing how you feel with those close to you will help.

Plus now you have found us you will find a very friendly bunch always willing to listen and offer support where they can. To help take your mind off things pop along to the [Group Specific] board I'm sure you will find something to interest you, if not just start talking and others will soon chip in.

Whatever happens we are here and always will be.

Hi Jo,

Welcome to psoriasisclub.
Nothing to add to what already has been said.
Myself I only went minor in the tar shampoo direction, but never use any steroids on my skin, and I am happy with that seen afterward. I have the luck to only marginally have the skin oriented Psoriasis. Don’t know if that is real luck, but whatever.
I am sorry for you that you got struck with Psoriasis, it is a nasty thing and it takes some time to accept the fact that you have to live with it.
Still there are a lot of possibilities so keep the head op.
Do you have an idea of where it comes from? Do you have ancestors who have it? Family? That gives a clue on if the origin is genetically drive or if the sources is somewhere else.

Hi Jo welcome to the club.
Have a good look around because this site has the most information on P and PsA than anywhere else that I know, no adverts or con merchant trying to sell you rubbish that does not work. Any questions will be answered by other fellow sufferers so they will be based on experience .
Get yourself a good NHS dermatologist who will know what he is doing, GPs know a little about a lot but not a lot about a little so you need an expert in the field .
P is a bloody annoying thing to be saddled with but on a better note in the last few years it has had many new treatments that have worked better than anything that's gone before .
Jump in and have a good look around ask any questions and,I know that it's difficult but try not to let it get you down there are a lot of us out here all over the globe and we support each other.
