Hi trying Acitretin for first time

Hi everyone,  I've had psoriatic arthritis for about 6 years - arthritis came with a vengeance about 4 years ago. Luckily after a pretty bad year the arthritis calmed down and I have had only light twinges since. Have also bronchiectasis so medication for this and psoriasis is a double whammy on the immune system. Should have started Acitretin in November last year but decided at the last moment not to as I was frightened of the side effects. Symptoms are much worse now and I have tried almost every cream known with no great success. Only thing which gave the most respite was when I was on a course of steroids for my lungs and that cleared it wonderfully. Only thing was that I nearly always had a bad flair up after. I've enjoyed reading through the posts, got some great info on Acitretin.  Second tablet tonight - fingers crossed side effects aren't too bad.

Hi Meggy and   to the forum, it's good that you have been reading up on Acetretin here, we have several members doing very well on it and I'm sure you will get to meet some of them... if you have any questions just shout out and I'm sure someone will answer you. Is acetretin the first oral drug you have been offered or have you tried others ..

I hope to read more of how it works for you ....you can usually find me propping up the [bar] if you want a chat or a virtual drink

I'm pleased to hear you have read through some of our threads of our members and decided to join in. Don't hesitate to start another thread in Prescribed Treatments For Psoriasis if you wish, it's a good way of keeping track of your progress and your input could help others.

You said that your psoriasis is cleared because of the steroids you were given for your lungs, I’m sorry to say Meggy, the psoriasis will return I’m sorry to say but the Acitretin should help a little.

As for a moisturiser to help your skin, get yourself some raw virgin coconut oil and rub it gently in your skin, yes you may smell like a Bounty bar but it’s extremely good stuff Meggy, trust me, I’m a bear

Anyway Meggy, hope that you come back and tell us how you’re doing

I am on acitretin too, low dose though but it seems to be keeping everything at bay at the moment *touch wood*.

Thank you for the welcome.  I've been started on the low dose too and was worried that it would not work.  Take hope from your message that it may.

Hi GB  Thanks for the tip about the coconut oil - not a bad thing to smell like a Bounty bar so will definitely try this.  I take chest infections almost continually in the winter so have many prescriptions of predisnolene so in the winter I have periods when skin is pretty good and then times when it is worse than normal because of the flairs -  but they say it is an ill wind that blows nobody any good and it is a pleasure to not have the niggling skin problems.

 I forgot to ask you if the side effects of acitretin stay the same or do they subside as time goes on.  All new to this but hopefully I will be able to answer questions instead of asking all the time.
