My name is Grant. I got my first psoriasis outbreak at the age of 30 last month same day as the fires in Santa Rosa. For almost a month I went to the doctors office and they did not know what I had they prescribed me prednizone steriods. Then I had this old physicians assistant tell me I had psoriasis on November 4. I made an appointment with a dermatologist for November 16. Since finding out I have psoriasis I have done a lot of research online. I quit energy drinks, coffee, sugar, have been going to the tanning salon doing relight therapy bed. I am taking a probiotic, milk thistle, tumeric, fish oil, l-lysine, vit d3, lotion, dead sea salt. I have it on my arms, legs, and stomach. Right now it is worst on my arms. It is awful, and to know that there is no cure it is chronic. I saw online some people who had it, and wanted to kill themselves. I can understand why. I am trying to stay strong, and do everything I can. I do not want to take the prednizone or any steriods because it did not help very much, on some blogs people said it came back worse after they stopped using it. It helped mine a little bit but not enough then I did not know I had psoriasis just a rash. It is not worth it for me. I am trying other methods. I wish I lived near the Dead Sea and could soak in it, or that I lived by a beach. I live in Boise Idaho its getting colder by the day will snow soon. I am visiting my grandmother in Florida in December that should be nice for my psoriasis also.

Hello Grant,

Welcome to Psoriasisclub.

Your introduction is in an awkward place in the forum, so probably it will be moved to a welcome thread by Fred.

I can very well imagine that it is a shock to find that Psoriasis is an incurable disease. But luckily we live in a time where lots of medication has been developed and most sufferers are at a certain point able to control the disease.
Probably the first steps of your derm will be treating you with creams and perhaps light treatment.
Depending on the behaviour and development of the Psoriasis, with everyone this is different, the derm will take steps toward systemic treatment (pills) or towards biologicals.

Most of the treatments have been described over here on the forum by people who have followed them, which gives you information out of first hand.

Enjoy on the forum, we have an awful lot of very friendly members.

Caroline.

Hi Grant and  Welcome to the club as a new psoriasis sufferer it is a hard thing to get your head round, but you are right what you say there is no cure and you can spend a fortune on various things that are sold as "cures" but my advice is to ignore the horror stories and take the advice of your doctor and read on here of the prescribed treatments that are available Prescribed Treatments For Psoriasis and read of real psoriasis sufferers experiences here. So when you see the dermatologist you can have a meaningful discussion with them about treatments.

You say you have read horror stories from sufferers about steroid creams and depression, but remember there are far more sufferers that have found a successful treatment to manage the disease....remember people come to forums usually because something doesn't work ....not many join and tell that the first treatment they tried worked ( some do and Alan on here did with his method) How I Cured My Psoriasis By Diet

I wish you luck in your quest for relief, and suggest you put your trust in your doctor
Good luck.....do keep us informed on your progress

Hello Grant  Welcome to Psoriasis Club.

Yes it can be a shock to find you have psoriasis, and then to learn that it is with you for the rest of your life. But it can be managed.

You say you have only had it a month and the creams didn't help much, that is usual and sometimes it will work for some. But it may mean just trying another cream, so I would stick with getting professional treatment. By doing that you will work your way up to a better treatment that could get you clear.

All the things you are trying now are not going to last in the long term and by trying so many things at once you will not know which one is helping. If you do want to go the natural way you should have a read on some threads here: Natural Treatments For Psoriasis

But whatever you do don't let it get to you, it is something that will get you down but you will always find others here willing to listen. Also keeping a positive mind about it will be one of the best natural things you can do, some manage with a positive attitude and sunshine.  Cool

Regards.

Fred.

*I will move your post to a new thread so it will get noticed better.

Hi Grant and welcome. I am a newbie to the forum but a very old friend of Psoriasis. It has been with me on and off for over 50 years, I was around 4 when diagnosed.

I'm having an outbreak and inverse P and not the plaque that I used to have. I have an appointment with a dermatologist in December, first time I over 30 years. I've managed my condition myself with GP input. This time, thanks to advice from the lovely folk here, I politely insisted on seeing a specialist.

It must have been a shock to receive your diagnosis. There will be a cream, lotion, potion or pill that will help, not cure but help to manage the P. I'm hoping you have family that you can talk to and it may help you to talk to a professional.

Read the information here although I went into information overload.

I'm happy to chat. Welcome again  Bigarm

Hi Grant, nice to meet you Wave

The feeling when you hear you can't just take something to cure psoriasis is pretty horrible at first but it does pass, and when you get on top of your symptoms and/ or get used to having it you should find it recedes into the background of life.
Steroid creams can be very effective, you have to use them properly though and not skip days. They are usually used for a couple of weeks, and you taper off at the end rather than stopping abruptly, all under guidance from the doctor. There's also lots of other treatments to try.

Try not to panic about your diagnosis, and though it sounds like you've gone in at the deep end with a bad outbreak, you will most likely also have long stretches where it's calmer and doesn't bother you nearly so much or at all. Hope you find this forum a good place to find info, and share your experiences.
