Good Morning All,

I have joined this forum for my father, Jim, who has Plaque Psoriasis.

My father is 60 years old and he had the first flare in about 2007 and it all started for there. It started from a little spot underneath his knee cap and then just started to spread all over his body until his upper back within a year and at that point my father consulted a doctor - this is when we found out that this is called Psoriasis. The doctor had given my father some steroid type of medication and it all went away for 3-4 months but then it came back twice as much when he was taken off the medication.

In mid 2008, we consulted a homeopathic doctor and with his medication it almost cleared up almost the entire body with a few spots on the body until recently in mid 2016. During his homeopathic treatment we also had various other treatments which are still ongoing to relieve everyday pain:

Olive Oil as a moisturizer
Vaseline as a moisturizer
Turmeric in a glass of warm water - I read somewhere this has worked for people with psoriasis so we started this.

For the last 8 months or so it started to come back and has gotten worse to the point where his entire body until his ears has been effected. We recently consulted a dermatologist and he has put him on Humira and Triamcinolone Acetonide Ointment, 0.1% starting February 23, 2017. At first the doctor gave him 2 shots in the first visit, 1 more shot the following week, 1 shot 15 days following that, 1 shot 15 days following that, and now has recommended a shot every week due the recent flare up.

I would appreciate any information on what else we could be done or anything that has worked for any member on this forum. I will post pictures of his current status when i get home later this evening or tomorrow morning.

Again thank you for your help!

Hi Jim  Welcome to the club ....it's admirable what you are researching for your dad, to be honest I think you have been doing the right thing since seeing a dermatologist .....you won't always get a fast response from a drug, and you are just at about 8 weeks on humira.... I would say if you don't start to see an improvement soon, ask to be moved onto another biological drug
There's no quick fix for him I'm afraid but it is trial and error to find the right one for him

Get him some extra virgin coconut oil as a moisturiser and wait a couple more weeks ...if no improvement ask to be moved onto another see this link for the various ones Biological Treatments For Psoriasis and look down at the Cosentyx link in the page, which is doing great things for sufferers

I look forward to hearing how your dad improves  Thumb

Welcome!

Hoping your Dad sees positive results with the Humira. As Jim said, it can take awhile to see results and if he's getting no relief then there are other choices.

It's great that he was able to keep it under control for so long, sorry to hear it's flared back up again but hopefully he'll be back on track soon.

Welcome on the forum.

We get an overload of Jim's...  Rolleyes

But anyway, I think there are still options for your dad.

A short overview below this post.

It is known in our experience that creams and potions always will fail in the end just as light therapy. It may help for a while, different from person to person, but in the end your skin will be too heavy damaged and you will have to stop.

Our Jim suggests Cosentyx, but I think that you might better first get some more information on Stelara. This last is more effective for Psoriasis, where Cosentyx works excellent for Psoriatic Arthritis.

But do take a look around on the forum. You can see with our members what they are using and what are their results.

Oh... and in my opinion, do avoid methotrexate. Smile

Hello young Jim Welcome to Psoriasis Club.

Your Dad is doing the right thing seeing a dermatologist and it will take time for the Humira to kick in. The Tumeric trick isn't going to do any long term good, so tell him to stick with the Humira for a while and let it do it's thing.

If Humira doesn't work there are other Bio's that will soon get him sorted. See this thread: Biological Treatments For Psoriasis but Humira is usually given 16 weeks before being pulled.

Regards.

Fred.

Thank you Jim, Kat, Caroline, and Fred!

I spoke with my father this morning, two things I forgot to mention was the dermatologist did put him on Otezla for 3 months but that was not doing any better for him and he does use virgin coconut oil - tends to switch between olive and coconut oils. I have started looking into the Biological Treatments that y'all mentioned here as a backup to Humira - thank you for letting me know that this is the early stage and Humira requires more time to kick in to show results, will track for 16 weeks as mentioned.

I am trying to attach pictures of the skin before and after taking Humira but it is not working...

Will keep you all updated on the progress and checking the forum to see what else I can find.

Truly appreciate all your feedback. Thank you and pray for a recovery for all members!

Thanks!

Hey Jim and welcome.

I think it's awesome that you are looking at this for your dad. Either helping to understand, understanding yourself etc. Really impressed. Hope the great people here can help answer your questions.

Massive thumbs up and hope your dads treatment is effective.

Hi Jim and welcome.
I hope that your dad will get results from the treatment he is on , P is a real sod of a problem to be saddled with but the latest treatment is a big leap forward to when I first started with it. Give him my best and I will look forward to hearing his progress.

Thanks for all the support everyone!

I apologize its been a while since I posted here as I was traveling for work. I just got home this weekend and was checking up on my father and now it seems like Humira is causing side effects on his body. The doctor has changed his dose to every week rather than every other week.

When this all first started, it came up up from a spot below his knee cap and up to his shoulders. Today as he was applying olive oil on his upper body, I saw that skin was pealing on this neck and on further examination - it seems as if it has spread all over his scalp on top of the eyebrows continuing to his sideburns area. There are a few spots below his eyes as well that are showing a reddish color - which he explained was the same way it started on his scalp.

I am not sure what to do at this point, I know Humira takes time to kick in but this has never happened till now where we saw it spread onto his face and scalp. I am making an appointment to see the dematologist this week to see what we can do.

Has anyone experienced the same side effects or know of this?

Thank you for your feedback!
