Introduction.  Psoriasis is associated with systemic metabolic and cardiovascular disorders, both of which share risk factors with erectile dysfunction (ED). However, few studies have investigated the association between ED and psoriasis.

Aim.  This study set out to estimate the association between ED and having previously been diagnosed with psoriasis by using a population-based dataset with a case-control design.

Methods.  This study used administrative claim data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance program. We identified 4,606 patients with ED as the study group and randomly selected 13,818 patients as the comparison group. Conditional logistic regression was used to examine the association between ED and having previously received a diagnosis of psoriasis.

Results.  Of the sampled patients, 136 (0.7%) had been diagnosed with psoriasis before the index date: 77 (1.7% of the cases) were from the study group and 59 (0.4% of controls) were from the control group. Conditional logistic regression analysis revealed that after adjusting for the patient's monthly income, geographic location, hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, coronary heart disease, obesity, and alcohol abuse/alcohol dependence syndrome status, patients with ED were more likely to have been diagnosed with psoriasis before the index date than controls (odds ratio = 3.85; 95% confidence interval = 2.72–5.44).

Conclusion. This study revealed an association between ED and prior psoriasis even after adjusting for potential confounding factors. The results of this study highlight a need for clinicians dealing with psoriasis patients to be alert to the possible development of ED.

Are there additional studies in Europe or US that confirm this studies... Scientifically this is a bit little material.

Yes certainly it has.
Since I have AP I live more controlled and doing more sports to keep fit.
The effect is that I feel myself much healthier than before, not only feel, but also "am"

:-)

And all kinds of studies are nice, but have to be confirmed by a number of co-studies otherwise they are of no value. I can also do a study, e.g. A study that statistically shows that English studies are more wrong that right, but would I be right then?

Yes we have to have more larger studies, but at least small ones will help bring these things out into the open and will hopefully lead onto larger studies in the future. and like the conclusion said:

I'm lucky and have never suffered with this problem and would imagine it could be very upsetting, but hopefully after reading this one person will be able to pluck up the courage to talk about it with their doctor.
I think the problem is two fold! #1 If you have psoriasis on the genital area it is not only painful, but difficult to talk about it unless you have an understanding partner. #2 It's a well known fact that psoriasis can give some people a Low Self Esteem, so this could be a huge underlying part of the reason for Erectile Dysfunction.

It's good to see some of the news that I find and publish, being talked about. And for me a small study even a very small study is worth it if it can help to get people talking about any problem related to psoriasis. Thumb

Oh and Caroline I wouldn't believe your study anyway, as you would tell us it's necessary for us all to go Spinning! Confused

You "bet" mr. Fred.
I surely would come with some studies that promote exercising :-)
to illustrate a picture from the spinning lesson.
