Hello,

I'm new to the online psoriasis club but a senior member of the life psoriasis club! I was diagnosed when I was 15 years old and I am now 39 and I although feel fortunate not to suffer as badly as others do I still deal with patches in um..shall we say, delicate places.

My question for my fellow sufferers is do you deal with dry skin in general or just on the affected areas?

My skin is dry and sensitive all over but particularly on my face. I'm wondering that despite there not being many visible patches on my person, my entire epidermis is affected by psoriasis and should be treated as so.
I've had a look online and not been able to come up with much more extensive information than the usual psoriasis blurbs, so if anyone can send me in the right direction I would much appreciate it!

Many thanks
Hannah

Hi Hannah and  Welcome  to the club, yes the lifetime psoriasis club is something we all belong to but would rather not, but at least you have found this friendly club to discuss the various ways we all deal with the disease
All the members here are happy to share their experiences and we tend to learn from each other's experience

The boards are packed with information on the various treatments that are available, Many on here use virgin coconut oil to moisturise and ease the itch of psoriasis, and I think as its natural it should be safe to use on those um.....delicate areas  Smile

I use coconut oil on my arms and legs but I'm sure others will tell you where they use theirs or even advise on something different

Enjoy your time on the forum and ask any questions you have and if you want to see the other side of the members...non psoriasis related ....pop into the off topic section for a chat or a chuckle
Good luck

Hi! Nice to meet you Wave

I think I know what you mean, I have struggled with very dry skin, particularly on my face and at times it hadn't mattered how much I moisturised, it still peeled and flaked and I got well meaning advice from friends who obviously thought I hadn't bothered. I find it much worse after a bath or shower, even though I don't wash my face with any soap or anything. It's not so bad at the moment, as long as I get some on my face as soon as I step out of the shower. In the winter I often get cracked lips and round my nose and under my earlobes etc and I believe it must all be down to psoriasis.

Thank you Jim and GB for your warm welcomes! And I really appreciate the coconut oil suggestion, and that your tip is a natural one!
Unfortunately I have problems with coconut oil, if I eat it it aggravates my psoriasis even more   Sad so it's best to stay away from it but you have reminded me to get back into the other oils that are helpful for my skin and for that, thank you!

Hi Turnedlight, this is very much my experience too!!! In winter it's best to avoid water on the my face except for one wash at the end of the day. One of the reasons I have stayed in Spain is because the climate helps with the psoriasis; sun and sea and the winters aren't so bad. I can imagine that living in the Uk with psoriasis would be really challenging.
And I am ALWAYS getting "helpful" suggestions from friends too
One thing that has helped in the past but that I find difficult to stick to is a Paleo type diet. Lots of vege, fruit, grassfed meats and stay away from processed foods and grains.
Thanks for the reply!  Big Grin

Interesting, I have not found coconut oil good either, I can eat it but it doesn't seem to help my skin.

Hi Voodoomamma

Welcome to the Club.....   I use a product called Dermol 500, it is an antimicrobial emollient and Moisturiser - good for Psoriasis and any other Dry Skin conditions.  It can also be used a s a soap substitute so is safe on 'delicate' areas - I use it in the shower too.
I have tried lots of products and I find this one the best as it soaks in quickly without leaving a grease feel.

Good luck
Tink xx

The paleo diet is also favoured by my doctor, who is not a normal dermatologist but a doctor with a far broader view on the functioning of life as a psoriasis patient.

Eating coconut oil? I thought it had to be used on your skin  Huh

O, by the way, a very welcome to psoriasisclub.  Big Grin
Don't mind GB or others, there are some lunatics walking around over here. Doh Luckily I am one of the few that is sensible. Big Grin

Cheers,

Welcome Hannah!

I do have dry skin now, but I think mine has come with age. I try to stay moisturized and hydrated, but sadly I can't turn back the clock. I have heard that hot water will increase dryness so I've been trying to make my showers a bit cooler and moisturizing right out of the shower seems to help as well.

I think that even without psoriasis I would have dry skin now, but again I think mine is more due to age (late 50's)
