Truly "Soap free" natural shampoo - recommendations please

Hi,

I have been looking looking for a soap free emollient based shampoo. So far I have come across a lot of so called Sulfate or SLS free shampoo's but when I look at the ingredients they still contain some kind of related soap(or detergent I should say) like chemical like sodium cocoate or laurate or something similar.

I have had some success with Aquanil which main ingredients include water and glycerin but there is a small amount of SLS and it seems my scalp psoriasis simply cannot tolerate any amount of any detergent like substance.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Difficult to find 100% natural shampoo but Soap Nuts could be worth a go as they are 100% natural, you don't get a lather but they do work. There is a thread here about them: Soap Nuts

I use Alphosyl, a Tar based shampoo prescribed by my GP (it is cheaper to buy over the counter)  - it doesn't leave a too nasty smell.

I also use Liz Earle shampoo and conditioner as it doesn't contain any Parabens or Sodium Laurly Sulphate(detergent)
This is nice to use if you are going out and don't want to smell like a Tar Pit -

Are you ok with soap but not detergent, or is it both?

When I was avoiding detergents I started making my own soap using oils and lye. Not as hard as it sounds, or you can buy homemade soaps like this from places like etsy.

You can also buy glycerine soap bars which you can lather up and use on hair. I'm not sure what the supermarket ones have but if you look up 'pure glycerine soap' there are online sellers.

We have an issue in our house with people being allergic to hand wash (that contain things like sls) but not soap, so I have to be very careful what to buy, ie liquified soap that usually comes from a small 'craft' seller.

The term sodium cocoate simply means coconut oil after the process of making it into a soap. If you have issues with sodium laureth sulphate you won't necessarily have issues with sodium cocoate as well.

I am new to the dreaded 'P'... so have avoided soap as well. I use an emolient cream which can be used as soap substitute.

Once I have my first appointment with a Dermatologist in 2 weeks it will be interesting to see what the treatment plan will be.

Yes it will be interesting to hear what treatment he recommends, but I'm sure you are going armed with good information from here so you can ask questions if you feel you are being fobbed off ..

Yes some of the emollients are a good soap substitute.....I used to use doublebase gel before showering
