Yep it is smelly, it stains everything , and will sting any broken skin

I was prescribed it back in the 1960s ! I used it once and threw it in the bin it is very messy

I thought that as a treatment it was a thing of the past or just used in hospital where they could wrap you up in it

Someone mentioned that the other day and it was because they were using their keyboard to add them rather than clicking on the smily from the list to add it. It must be something to do with the codes, just try clicking a smily from the list and it should add it for you.

Hi Keely
Used it fairly recently. Coal tars are the only thing that has had any appreciable effect with me. One was quite good but our interfering EU cousins banned it. Sebco is a reasonable replacement but its only supposed to be prescribed for scalp treatment so you would need a helpfull Doc but would never stick it on your face. Slap it on for as long as you can tolerate up to about an hour and shower off. I found Tubigrip tube bandages over the sludge helped stop everything from staining. I only used it once a day. I doubt 2 weeks would be enough to clear it unless you are very lucky. As for the smell, its stinks like you have just  bathed in Jeyes fluid.   Blush  There was a light CTar lotion came in a green plastic bottle for my face but never needed it, can't for the life of me remember its name.
Good to see we haven't frightened you off come back and tell us more  Thumb

Has anyone ever used this? Is it as bad as I'm expecting it to be???

Yes in a word.

Christchurch hospital use to admit you once upon a time but not anymore sadly.

The coal tar stuff they put on me stank like hell, i was covered in this stuff then wrapped up like tutankhamun.

Within 10 - 20 mins, my whole body felt like someone had poured petrol over it & put a match to it !!!!

They threw me in the shower & washed me off rather quickly.

They put to stronger coal tar on me so they started me off on a low dose & gradually increased my dosage, it worked.

I spent 4 weeks in Christchurch derm hospital & it nigh on cleared my P.

However, as JohnB says, some eu codswallop ruling etc etc has nearly banned all strong coal tar things. Perhaps they wanted a back hander from the company that makes the stuff, i don't know but i hope you get the treatment Keeley, if so, good luck & i hope it works for you Thumb

My understanding is that the EU banned coal tar in cosmetics due to it possibly being carcinogenic. However polytar (If that is what you are referring to) is not classed as a cosmetic but Stiefel pulled it and started using it as an excuse. Polytar wasn't being prescribed as much as used to be do to other products coming forward and Stiefel decided it was better to concentrate on their other products.

There has been a lot of discussions about it, but as far as I know no one has ever managed to get a satisfactory answer from Stiefel on why it is no longer available and is it in relation to the EU ruling.

Sorry I'm going off topic here, but I have never seen a satisfactory answer on why it is no longer available and would like to see one.

Stiefel pulled it Fred ?

That seems odd because it's still made by them in the far east.

You can buy it off Fleabay for £90 - £125 [Image: m1818.gif]

Who in the hell is going to pay that much for a bottle i wonder ? (not bloody me that's for sure lol)

As far as I know they pulled it and won't give an exact answer that confirms it was because of the ruling.

I wouldn't buy off the internet unless it's a registered phamacie, they probably scrape it out from their chimney in some far off land and shove it in an old bottle with a fake label.  Big Grin
