was talking to my boyfriends mum today and she was telling me her boyfriend is going into hospital next week for a week to do tar treatment and will then have light treatment after to keep him clear. I didn't even know they still done this! I used to get this done about 20 years ago when I was a little girl! Anyone else tried this in recent years?

Couldn't agree more! Even the smell brings back memories of being covered on the stuff Lying on a hospital bed

It was the first treatment I ever had as a teenager, never was admitted to hospital with it though just given jars of the stuff, it ruined clothes, reduced self esteem even further, for me I suffered psoriasis rather than ruin my clothes and bedding with tar .and at the first sign of sunshine I was strolled off soaking it up, that's what worked for me

I understand it's a good treatment as an in patient as coal tar can be quite effective, however in this day and age when there are so many " clean" treatments that go to the heart of the problem and treat you from the inside to fix the outside .... I can only think it's used as emergency to reduce plaques until another treatment kicks in

I do remember some very smelly stuff when I first got psoriasis on my scalp many years ago, but never continued with it maybe it was tar but I cant remember now.

I have heard of tar treatment, but I thought they stopped doing as it was a carcinogenic or something. But I could be talking rubbish, so don't quote me ion it.

It would be interesting if you updated this thread after his visit and let us know how it went, also can you find out how it is done. Like is it a cream or bath treatment?

My my that takes me back quite a few years when I went into hospital the first couple of times for treatment but the last twice I have been in hospital there was no sign of the smelly treatment though if I close my eyes I can still almost smell it.
The last time I went in was about 12 years ago so maybe they have brought it back !!

I still buy it in drug stores OTC. IT's coal tar 1.25% mixed with aloe Vera, vitamin E & D, salysalic acid, and a great addition to my Arsenal. It really helps my palmoplanter P. And PPP. Sometimes I mix it with utter cream for cows. I know, things that's make ya go mmmmm! But it works for me.

There's a lot of over the counter products made for P. than ever before and they do work for me. I try to catch it early. Over the years I'm a bit OCD about preventative p cycles. I have learned most of my triggers.

Even hospitals still use it here even as far away as Australia. The theory is that it blocks the small capillary veins that feed the p cells thru the lL-17 pathway deep in the derm tissue which in turn can help with clearing.

Anyway just my 2cents.

I must be a bit odd cos I actually like the smell of coal tar! I still use Wright's coal tar soap for washing my hands and as a body soap (apologies to my long suffering wife who HATES the smell!!!!). As for the messy stuff, like the rest of you it was a nightmare on clothes and bedding and I much preferred Exorex lotion to the greasy, oily ointments "back in the day".

I don't dislike the smell it's just that it brings back memories of hospital treatment when in the late 60s/early 70s they still sacrificed goats to the god Zeus and used witchcraft to cook the food, I don't think they have stopped that part yet.
