Hi all:

I'm a newbie and wondering if anyone else had their first major outbreak of psoriasis in their late 50s? I seem to have the type that effects mostly my feet and hands ... other spots occur when I get chafed or injured.

I've just started low dose Naltrexone -- up to 3 mg but can't really tell if it's working :( Anyone having much luck with a change in diet??

Merry Christmas to everyone -- no snow here -- just lots of rain.

Maud

Hello Maud  Welcome  to Psoriasis Club.

I can't think of a member off hand that first got it in their late 50s, but it can strike anyone at anytime of their life.

As for the diet think, I cant do it myself as I enjoy my food and drink. But you may find something of interest here Natural Treatments For Psoriasis
This thread especially may be of interest The anti-inflamatory food pyramid

Please do have a good look around, you will find us a friendly bunch always willing to help if we can.

Regards.

Fred.

hello Maud and a big  Welcome to the club there are not many on here today as it seems we all have other things to do
But usually you will find a great bunch of people here happy share their experiences and we are always happy to to chat about psoriasis
My psoriasis started when I was 17 so I can't really help with a diagnosis age 50 I do know when ever it hits you it's devastating and takes a lot of coming to terms with... I'm not sure I ever did come to terms with mine even now although I am virtually clear it's always a fear that it could erupt anytime
I have heard of LDN being used for relief of chrohn's , and MS as well. But there are mixed reviews about psoriasis .... I hope it's working for you as its a dirt cheap treatment .
I used to find if I had a cut or broken skin anywhere I would generally get a plaque form there....

I wish you much luck and hope you get clearance please keep us informed with your progress as your experience may help others

SEASONS GREETINGS TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY
No snow here either just cold  and windy

I had psoriasis first and didn't know it.Thought i had dandruff and the in back of my ears and along side my nose. This I had for many years but suddendly i had swelling of my right knee, could barely walk.Went to see my Dermatologist about my scalp, ears and nose. She told me it was psoriasis and i mentioned my knee.Said she suspected it was psoriatic arthritis and sent me to a rheumatologist. and he confirmed that i do indeed have PSA he did blood work to find.I have been seeing him for 9 years. That would have made me 55 yrs old when i finally figured out what was wrong with me.I had to get my knee drained the 1st visit oh my the pain. Then a few more time,it hurt but after he took the fluid out i felt so much better. Then last year I had the Orthopedic Surgeon strip my sonovial sack to prevent further fluid build up.While doing the surgery he found i had a torn Meniscus and he repaired it.Told me I am going to need a new knee in the future.I will put it off till i can't walk so well.I am doing ok so why bother at this time.I am so sick of hospitals and surgeries.Would you believe I have 11 Dr's plus a Dentist and Eye DR.I filed for disability and got it the 1st time I applied .I believe my age helped they figured I was going to get Soc.Sec in another year.

Thanks for the warm welcome; glad to see the link to the anti-inflammatory diet [seems pretty healthy and balanced]. I had rotten "dandruff" for most of my life along with small pits on my nails -- apparently those were markers of psoriasis!! Oh well, now to find some relief for my poor cracked feet -- going to try phototherapy in the new year.

You're welcome there are others but at this time of the year they are all with their families, and we do try to give give them a little time off if they've behaved themselves all year.  Big Grin

Yes the nail pits a classic sign. For your cracked feet if you want to stay natural I can recommend soaking your feet in luke warm water and Sea Salt (you don't need the expensive stuff, just a good quality eating Sea Salt will do) then use Cocount Oil twice a day.

More on Coconut Oil:
Coconut Oil

Oh and try Bamboo socks they are nice and soft.

Hi Maud and it's nice to see you back. Yes phototherapy worked for me for a large portion of my life . That and natural sunlight .... But it always came back after a while
There are some good moisturisers available to soothe your hands and feet which may give relief and stop the skin cracking
Fred is a great lover of coconut oil and it is effective as a moisturiser .... No mater what I do my nails are always pitted and striated .
.
I'm sure unless you have major flares you are unlikely to get a biological treatment or an oral tablet.... At least that's the case here where I live in England

I wish you much luck do keep us updated

Hi Maud and Welcome!

I was diagnosed with psoriasis this past year and I'm 55. I'm on light therapy which seems to have helped quite a bit. My scalp was the worse to deal with, I 've not had dandruff much until after the psoriasis hit and then I had major problems with scalp flaking! I'm still having dry scalp issues so some dandruff, but not the scaling that I was having.

Glad to see you here!
